By JAMES EIK Staff Reporter A new location for the Medical Lake Food Bank couldn't have come at a better time. The food bank has seen demand for its services more than double since June 2009, when it provided food for 114 families. This past June, it served 245 and new clients are coming in double digits each month. But, while the new building has helped with some areas, the food bank still faces difficulties. “Just because we moved into a new location doesn't mean we're flush with cash,” food bank director Peg James sai... Full story

  • Alan Hale

On July 2, 2012, Cheney lost a great member of its community. A husband, father, decorated fighter pilot, Air Force test pilot, businessman, and professor, Alan Hale left an indelible mark on the many lives he touched and we were all fortunate to have known him. Born in Providence, Utah, 1937 to Seymour (Bill) and Velda Hale, Alan was the eldest of seven children and grew up in the communities of Oakley and Payette, Idaho. After graduating high school in 1954, he entered the service as a pilot in the Idaho Air National Guard... Full story

  • Letters to the Editor

Ruts in Cheney's brick crosswalks cause damage to cars I am writing this letter to address the issue of the brick crosswalks in downtown Cheney. Is it going to take someone having an accident before someone notices? I have driven over those many times and worried about damaging my car. That was the worst idea any one has ever had in this town. What were they thinking? We have plows and ice heaves in Cheney. I wish someone would please address this before something bad happens. Patricia Cox Cheney Compromise doesn't exist in... Full story

  • In Our Opinion: A candidate's true mettle lies beyond the lines of religion

When considering qualifications of candidates for elected office, how much weight should be put on personal matters not directly related to the job? It's a question many voters are asked and sometimes told to consider virtually every election cycle and at least when national or state offices are up for grabs. And there are plenty of examples of campaigns and outside interest groups using aspects of candidates personal lives to cast doubt on their qualifications for office. One personal attribute that seems to always raise...

The Summer Hawks went 3-2 in the Cheney pod of the annual Spokane American Legion Wood Bat Classic, culmi...

  • Write to the Point Let's celebrate our many local volunteers

It was pretty hectic for me and the rest of the staff to come up with stories, gather all the information, write and design all the pages on this weekend's activities. Hopefully our work will pay off and you, dear reader, will be informed and entertained beyond belief. I was fee...
