  • After one year in new digs, ML food bank still goes strong

    JAMES EIK, Staff Reporter|Updated Jul 18, 2013

For the past year, the food bank has enjoyed its spacious new location at 207 S. Washington St. It’s reaped the benefits of having a very accessible location in Medical Lake, next to the library and post office. “The new facility is half again what we had before. We streamlined the operation so we’re able to move people through here more quicker,” Food Bank director Peg James said. Before moving into the new building, the food bank’s system for serving clients was far less efficient than it is today. In addition, the past...

Development Services Director Derrick Braaten said the process, which started back in the late months of 2011, has seen numerous delays along the way due to various factors. • Blue Devils need players to step up

    PAUL DELANEY, Staff Reporter|Updated Jul 18, 2013

Spokane Blue Devils’ coach Tony Byrne thought some rest might benefit his team because during the month of June they played on 19 of 30 days, and practiced on a number of others. So in the lead-up to both the July 4 Woodbat Classic, and the stretch run for the Spokane American Legion AAA season, the schedule was lighter date-wise, but as it turned out, had a heavyweight’s punch to it. The Blue Devils played an exhibition games last Tuesday versus visiting Excelsior, Minn. whe...

  • Medical Lake turns to having fun in Woodbat Classic

    PAUL DELANEY, Staff Reporter|Updated Jul 18, 2013

Medical Lake AA American Legion baseball coach Kerry Kelly might think he has the cure for the grind of a summer baseball season that involves nightly practice and games on top of that – more baseball. At least that seemed to be the approach he took during the recently completed Woodbat Classic in which his team didn’t achieve fame, but Kelly insists, they had fun. Medical Lake finished 0-3-1 in pool play they hosted at Holliday Field, falling to Saskatoon, Saskatchewan 13-...

  • Cheney sizzles, then fizzles in Woodbat play

    PAUL DELANEY, Staff Reporter|Updated Jul 18, 2013

Like fireworks sometimes do, there can be the spectacular bangs, flashes and light shows. Or they can occasionally be a dud. That might best sum up the Cheney SummerHawks’ run through the Woodbat Classic in which they won convincingly in their opener 11-0 over Spanaway, Wash. but fell 6-3 to Regina, Saskatchewan on day one. Then Friday, Cheney was crushed by the Spokane Dodgers Blue select team 16-3 and fell 8-0 to Mead. Saturday’s non-qualifier game was a 16-8 loss to Fer...

    John McCallum, Editor|Updated Jul 18, 2013

Josh Schrock, Michael Adams and Gary Munoz share several traits. One is a desire for a little occupational independence. The other is a love for making things. Both of these led the trio to open A&S Custom Welding and Paint in the former home of West Plains Small Engine Repair at 114 First St. in Cheney. The three men opened the shop June 1, and after a slow start are beginning to see things pick up, making for an interesting schedule as all three have jobs elsewhere. “Josh h...

  • Klink's undergoes name, tenant change

    DREW PETERSON, Staff Intern|Updated Jul 18, 2013

While everything may appear the same at first glance, the wildly popular Klink’s restaurant has undergone a tenant change and is now The Bistro at Williams Lake. While the restaurant bears a new name, the look and feel of the place is much the same after longtime business owners and married couple Jerry Schrader and Robin Riemcke took over the restaurant as the new leasehold tenants. “Jerry was working there last year...

  • Looking Back

    Updated Jul 18, 2013

1 Years Ago July 17, 2003 Cheney Police Chief Greg Lopes decided not to retire after all, postponing his decision to step down from the job by a full year at the request of Mayor Amy Jo Sooy. The job to change how parking in downtown Cheney is permitted in the future may not have a solution anytime soon as a hearing by the city’s Planning Commission ended up creating more questions than answers. The city of Medical Lake was complaining that it was “virtually impossible” to access work crews from area prisons with a few d...

  • Sailing through stunning landscapes in the name of science

    Dr E KIRSTEN PETERS, Contributor|Updated Jul 18, 2013

Each year at this time thousands of tourists embark on cruises along Alaskas stunning coastal waters. If they are lucky, the tourists experience dry weather, relatively calm seas, and breathtaking vistas. In some places the ships can get up close and personal to dramatic scenes of glaciers “calving” ice that breaks off and falls into the ocean. Although I’ve hiked up to glaciers in the Rockies and walked across them, I’ve never seen them entering the sea. I’d like to do that and have the notion recorded on my “bucket l...

Pastor Nick Hawkins said there was about $130,000 in damage when...

  • A gift from the United States to mideast zealots

    Robert Scheer, Columnist|Updated Jul 18, 2013

The U.S. government has long been a hypocritical champion of democratic governance, claiming to honor free elections but historically attempting to subvert their outcomes when the result is not to our liking. But the rank betrayals of our commitment to the principles of representative democracy, from Guatemala to Iran to South Vietnam, among the scores of nations where we undermined duly elected leaders, reached a nadir with the coup by a U.S.-financed military in Egypt against that country’s first democratically elected g...

  • Rodeos aren't for everyone, but they can be fun

    James Eik, Staff Reporter|Updated Jul 18, 2013

I’m not a rodeo guy. Roping cattle, wearing chaps and staring down the eyes of a raging bull just aren’t really my cup of tea and the closest I get to cattle tends to be around dinnertime. My grandpa enjoyed rodeos, however, and I was lucky to see one with him some years ago. It’s a memory I still cherish today. While I’m not a rodeo guru, I do appreciate the labor and amount of hard work that go into the rodeo lifestyle, traveling across the country, hoping to make the next competition on time. It’s similar to the lifestyle...

  • Potential for big success with Rodeo and Jubilee – together

    Updated Jul 18, 2013

This weekend is arguably the biggest event for Cheney in any year – and it’s getting bigger. Outside of maybe an Eastern Washington University-University of Montana football game, more people come here for the Cheney Rodeo than at any other time. And for the last two years, the Cheney Jubilee has helped swell those numbers Saturday and Sunday. Volunteers for both organizations work hard to make each year better than the last, adding more attractions, prize money for competitions along with space and amenities and with it mor...
