  • The passing of a track legend

    PAUL DELANEY, Staff Reporter|Updated Jul 2, 2015

When Lawson Van Kuren arrived in Cheney nearly a half century ago to begin his teaching and coaching career he was given his choice of what he would like to coach at Fisher Junior High School. It was 1966 and Fisher principal Jack Philleo told his new hire he could take on wrestling or track. While it's not exactly certain how things might have turned out had he chosen wrestling, money has it Van Kuren would have plowed the same energy he did into track and field, the sport...

  • Looking Back

    Updated Jul 2, 2015

1 Years Ago July 7, 2005 The residential growth trend continued for Medical Lake as it was announced a new addition to Silver Hills would contain 72 homes on a 27-acre development named Silver Hills West. Flickering lights in a large number of Cheney households were attributed to some of the 500 insulators installed a decade ago that were deemed defective. The problem happened following rainstorms. Val Von Lehe, who coached the Medical Lake High School girl’s basketball program from 1984-1992, but resigned to raise a new b...

  • Telling mom about stepson better done sooner than later

    Updated Jul 2, 2015

Hi Celeste, I am currently dating a woman with a son. We get along great. He’s a good kid. My mom wants to meet my girlfriend but I haven’t dropped the knowledge about the son. Should I let my mom know right away or wait until she meets them? Lee W. Dear Lee, You need to let your mom know, the sooner the better. Surprising your mother with something that important is ill advised. If the relationship is serious and mom sees that you are happy, she will most likely welcome a step grandchild with open arms, if that is where the...

  • BNSF removes 'I-sore'

    Updated Jul 2, 2015

During a May 6 community forum on increasing train traffic through Cheney, Cheney resident Pamela Gray brought my attention to a large, dead, pine tree at the end of I Street in downtown Cheney. She even brought a picture of the tree to pass out at the meeting. At the close of the forum I spoke briefly with Gray and indicated I would see what could be done about removing the tree. After I finished talking to Gray, Ross Lane, regional public affairs director for Burlington Northern Santa Fe, introduced himself to me and...

  • Another indictor of racial tensions in our country

    Updated Jul 2, 2015

Before pointing too many fingers at our beleaguered Secret Service agency and its recent foibles, we should consider its success so far in its bottom line responsibility: to keep President Obama and family alive and injury-free. Interviewed during Obama’s 2012 visit to Portland, Ore., the Secret Service reported that “Obama faces more death threats than any other president. More than 30 a day.” (Portland Oregonian, 7/28/12). This is consistent with the big spike in U.S. hate groups, spread quite evenly over all states excep...

  • Revolution's matchstick: The Trans-Pacific Partnership

    RIVERA SUN, Contributor|Updated Jul 2, 2015

Rolling down the corporate-political assembly line is a trade deal so treasonous to the people of the world that it should serve as revolution’s matchstick. The treaty is secret, but one fact is well known: the Trans-Pacific Partnership agreement is being negotiated by transnational corporations without a single U.S. legislator present. Each time I hear this, my eyes blink in disbelief. Without a single legislator present ... without their presence at negotiations, without so much as seeing a draft of the deal, and most treac...

  • Charleston's tragedy is the nation's wound

    Updated Jul 2, 2015

The following June 29 editorial from the Panama City News Herald may or may not reflect the views of the Cheney Free Press editorial board. In the wake of the murders at a Charleston, S.C. church, details are sinking in — and with them, the recognition that racism lives, breathes and festers, even as we dream that it is a thing of the past. A man just 21 — looking more like a schoolboy than a hard-core white supremacist — stands accused of killing nine respected community members, all black, at the historic Emanuel Afric...

  • EWU trustees approve preliminary budget

    PAUL DELANEY, Staff Reporter|Updated Jul 2, 2015

The Eastern Washington University board of trustees felt confident enough in the legislative process in Olympia they would have a budget to approve that they scheduled a June 26 meeting in Cheney. So much for great expectations when dealing with lawmaking bodies that had to first go through their regular session of 104 days and then into three overtimes before finally agreeing June 28 on a compromise. That did not hamper the guiding hands of the trustees, at least the five...

  • Airway Heights looks at new logo, asks residents for feedback

    AL STOVER, Staff Reporter|Updated Jul 2, 2015

Airway Heights is looking at making some cosmetic changes in hopes of enhancing its economic development, one being the recent update to its website. Another is a new city logo. In collaboration with a marketing firm, the city designed a new logo earlier this year. Its design features the city's name in blue letters with an airplane flying above it. The airplane represents Airway Heights' close proximity to Spokane International Airport and Fairchild Air Force Base, as well...

    John McCallum, Editor|Updated Jul 2, 2015

The Cheney City Council approved the city’s six-year, $6.4 million transportation improvement plan at its June 23 meeting. Of that funding, $4.9 million is planned for grant-eligible projects, with $655,470 in grant-eligible matching projects and $1.93 million in funded preservation projects. The residential street plan calls for $1.8 million in p...

  • Medical Lake asks residents not to light fireworks

    AL STOVER, Staff Reporter|Updated Jul 2, 2015

The city of Medical Lake is requesting residents refrain from using fireworks on the Fourth of July. Medical Lake Fire Chief Jason Mayfield explained that the city is not forcibly banning fireworks but rather asking residents to “voluntarily ban” them. This volunteer ban is a result of the recent drought conditions, hot temperatures and potential threat of wildfires. “We’ve already had lots of fires this year,” Mayfield said. “The prudent thing would be for residents not to set off fireworks.” The City Council voiced similar...

  • Fire ratings clarification

    Updated Jul 2, 2015

In last week’s In Our Opinion on fire safety it was mentioned that homes in rural areas carry a fire insurance rating between 8-10. Not so in rural areas of Spokane County Fire District 3. Because of the district’s efforts, Fire Chief Bruce Holloway said homes outside Cheney carry a fire rating of 5 if they are within 1,000 feet of a fire hydrant and five miles of a fire station. Homes outside of 1,000 feet of a hydrant, and still within five miles of a station have a fire rating of six....

  • Cheney CHAS clinic hits funding setback

    John McCallum, Editor|Updated Jul 2, 2015

Plans to open a community clinic in Cheney serving the West Plains have hit a snag as hoped for federal funding has fallen through, at least for now. Community Health Association of Spokane — CHAS — announced plans in October 2014 of its intentions to open its 11th clinic in the Inland Northwest in Cheney at the former location of Jarms ACE Hardware. CHAS’s research showed the clinic could potentially serve roughly 8,700 individuals in Cheney, Medical Lake and the surrounding areas who are low-income and either lack healt...

  • ...and summer's just barely started

    John McCallum, Editor|Updated Jul 2, 2015

Residents' efforts to comply with the city's request to sharply curtail water use this past weekend helped Cheney avoid a critical situation regarding its water supply. But with more hot weather on the way, and an even hotter and drier summer than in 2014 forecasted, last week's restrictions could become more commonplace without continued conservation measures. The city's water issues actually began in April when a drier than normal spring led to an early start of the irrigati...
