  • Medical Lake Legion teams start slow

    PAUL DELANEY, Staff Reporter|Updated May 31, 2018

Medical Lake’s American Legion teams got off to a slow start last week. The Medical Lake Legion Post 196’s AA team lost its opening night doubleheader on May 25 at Holliday Field to Trail, B.C. 14-1 and 8-3. Gavin O’Brien had a triple and batted in the lone ML run in the opener. “Lots of errors on our part,” head coach Austin Sharp wrote in an email. But the fixes are there as players learn each other and new positions, he added. Seth Mayer had a hit and RBI while O’Brien club...

    PAUL DELANEY, Staff Reporter|Updated May 31, 2018

Medical Lake’s Cory Wagner did his part to get the Community Colleges of Spokane into championship contention at the Northwest Athletic Conference’s baseball tournament in Longview, Wash. Wagner, a sophomore, threw eight innings, allowing one run in the Sasquatch’s 2-1 loser-out contest win over Lane Community College on May 26. CCS, however, fell to Yakima 5-4 May 27 and were eliminated. CCS opened the tournament on May 24 with a 4-3 win over Linn Benton on May 24, but lost...

Back in Joliette, Ill., Cooper will face off against seven other drivers in a winner-take-all national championship in the Super Comp dragster division of the Jegs All Stars at Route 66 Dragway. PAUL DELANEY, Staff Reporter|Updated May 31, 2018

Medical Lake’s Noah Ray split four matches at the state 1A/2B/1B tennis tournament in Yakima finishing seventh in singles. Ray defeated Nicholas Arron from University Prep 7-6 (6), 6-3 to open the tournament. He lost to eventual champ, Cashmere’s Tyler Kert 6-1, 6-0. That set up a rematch with a familiar face, Tyson Lim of Deer Park who he easily defeated 6-0, 6-0 but Ray lost to fourth-place finisher Caleb Hardesty of Tonasket, 6-0, 6-2. “Personally, I feel that Noah...

  • Medical Lake track has solid individual efforts at state

    PAUL DELANEY, Staff Reporter|Updated May 31, 2018

Traditionally, at least in the past several years, the 1A state track and field championships have produced surprises for Medical Lake head coach Gene Blankenship. That included a team title in 2014 that his kids insisted was in grasp, but the coach did not see it. And perhaps some of the individual championships from the likes of Domenic Rehm in 2015 and twin wins from Lexi Rolan in the 100 and 200-meter runs last year, might have also been somewhat unexpected. There was no...

    GRACE POHL, Staff Intern|Updated May 31, 2018

Seniors Aaron Fillmore and Dixon Gerber represented Cheney High School’s boys tennis team last weekend at the 2A State Tournament in Seattle. The duo was the only Great Northern League competitors in the bracket. The first match was against Blake Wilker and Thomas Hughes from Sequim. Fillmore and Gerber came out firing in the first set, winning 7-5. The Sequim duo took the next two sets 6-1 and 7-5 for the match win. “The other team came back and stopped making less errors and we started making some more,” head coach Jesse...

  • It's time to take the anthem out of protests

    John McCallum, Managing Editor|Updated May 31, 2018

I agree with those who are tired of seeing sports and politics mixed and would like to do something to take the latter out of the former. My solution probably won’t land me on any Christmas card lists. Last week, the National Football League announced it would implement a new policy of fining teams whose players refuse to stand during the national anthem. It’s a response to a practice players use to protest racial injustice in this country, begun by former quarterback Colin Kaepernick in 2016 and continued this past sea...

  • Ljubisic and Baycroft make it to finals in state golf

    GRACE POHL, Staff Intern|Updated May 31, 2018

Cheney High School golfers had a good showing in the 2A state tournament at the Columbia Point Golf Course in Richland, including a top-10 finish by Thomas Baycroft. Baycroft tied for 10th overall after shooting a 78 in the first round followed by 72 in the second, good for 150 total strokes. With this finish, he had the best performance in the Great Northern League. Chase McIntosh from Liberty (Issaquah) took first with 139 strokes. Nate Koohns also competed on the boys side, but did not make the cut for the second round...

  • Lady Blackhawks' state appearance ends on first day

    John McCallum, Managing Editor|Updated May 31, 2018

While the experience and memories of making it to the state 2A tournament will last a lifetime, Cheney High’s softball team’s stay was all too brief. The Lady Blackhawks couldn’t find an answer offensively for Woodland’s Olivia Grey in the tournament opener for both teams Friday morning. The Beavers junior struck out 18 and allowed just two hits, singles by Maddie Kallsen and Logan Krantz, as the eventual state champions shutout Cheney 6-0. The Lady Blackhawks found some of their offense in their consolation round game ag...

  • Blackhawk girls come up short in state title bid

    John McCallum, Managing Editor|Updated May 31, 2018

It wasn't the way Cheney High girls head coach Tom Stralser would have preferred to have his track and field coaching career end, but it was still a satisfying conclusion nonetheless. The Blackhawks battled through adversity and some disappointment to finish eighth overall at the 2A state track and field championships May 24-26 at Mt. Tahoma High School in Lakewood. Cheney scored 26 points, all hard-earned, to finish ahead of Lakewood but behind Sehome and Great Northern Leagu...

  • Two in a row

    John McCallum, Managing Editor|Updated May 31, 2018

It may not have set a record, but it did achieve half of Cheney High School boys track and field head coach Derek Slaughter's goal. Led by the four state titles of senior sprinter Charles Johnson, the Blackhawk boys out-pointed the team they tied with last year - Ridgefield - to earn their second consecutive 2A state championship in competition May 24-26 at Mt. Tahoma High School near Tacoma. Cheney outscored Ridgefield 55-41, not quite the 82 points Slaughter had hoped to...
