  • Lady Blackhawks shutout Clarkston in playoff opener

    John McCallum, Managing Editor|Updated May 16, 2019

For Cheney High School softball head coach Gary Blake — and many of his spring sports counterparts — “prom” is a four-letter word. The annual spring social function creates a myriad of distractions in most teenagers minds, and in Blake’s experience, his Lady Blackhawks have never played very well the night before the big dance. The latter gave Cheney’s veteran softball coach some added trepidation in that this year’s high school event was moved from late April to early May, coinciding with the start of the Great Norther...

    SHANNEN TALBOT, Staff Reporter|Updated May 16, 2019

The Cheney High School boys soccer season came to an end on May 11 when the Grandview Greyhounds eliminated the Blackhawks 4-1 in a district crossover match. An easy win in the Great Northern League championship match against Clarkston at Eastern Washington University’s Roos Field on May 7 sent the Blackhawks to a home playoff game, where they stumbled against an aggressive Greyhound offense. Cheney (14-3, 11-0) couldn’t seem to find the back of the net in the first half, with Grandview (1-0, 0-0) scoring in the 14th and 35t...

Both teams came out hitting in the first inning with the Cards taking a 2-1 lead going into a scoreless second, and by the top of the fifth the Cards had a three-run lead. But by then the Scotties bats had warmed up, knocking in five...

  • Ditch the graphics during the action

    John McCallum, Managing Editor|Updated May 16, 2019

This summer marks the 50th anniversary of humankinds first walk on the Moon, which you must admit is an interesting way to start out a sports column. I can’t say the same thing about the incorporation of graphics and special effects i...
