  • Medical Lake settles for second place after Colville loss

    PAUL DELANEY, Staff Reporter|Updated May 14, 2015

Medical Lake's quest for an undisputed boy's Northeast A League soccer championship ran into a big roadblock in Colville last Thursday, May 7. Colville's 5-1 win not only halted Medical Lake's six game winning streak but also awarded the Indians sole possession of the top spot having won the total goals battle 7-4 following the Cardinals' earlier 3-2 win. Medical Lake (8-2 Northeast A League, 8-8 overall) entered the week with a one-game lead over Colville (8-2, 9-3) and maint...

  • Cardinals suffers pair of heartbreaking baseball losses

    PAUL DELANEY, Staff Reporter|Updated May 14, 2015

Two more tough one-run losses to Deer Park added to the frustration this baseball season for Medical Lake last week. The Cardinals fell 4-3 in nine innings May 5 and 5-4 on April 28 and have dropped six of their last seven Northeast A League games going into a first-round, loser-out playoff game May 12 at Lakeside (9-5 NEA, 11-8 overall). Perhaps the Cardinals’ most deflating defeat was the 5-4 setback where they appeared to be cruising to victory with a 4-0 lead and n...

    PAUL DELANEY, Staff Reporter|Updated May 14, 2015

The bad news for the Medical Lake High School softball team got worse in the form of a losing streak that has been next to impossible it seems to break out of. The good news is there is still time for the Cardinals to turn things around before the start of the playoffs. Medical Lake (4-7 Northeast A, 5-10 overall) saw its winless string reach eight games following a 15-10 defeat at the hands of Davenport in a nonleague contest May 6. It was the only game for Medical Lake last...

Cheyenne Marchand finished fourth overall, hitting a 44. Head coach Gerald Morton said Marchand, along with the rest of the team, played through tough...

  • Cardinal boys tops in NEA tennis

    PAUL DELANEY, Staff Reporter|Updated May 14, 2015

A pair of road victories, plus one at home last week sealed a 2015 Northeast A League boy’s tennis championship for Medical Lake. The Cardinals raced past Chewelah 4-1 on May 5 and Riverside, 5-0 last Thursday and 4-1 Friday versus Deer Park. Getting that first victory to start the week was crucial. “This was a big win for the boys as Chewelah posed the biggest threat to us after Lakeside,” co-head coach Dawn Eliassen said. But the title was not much of a surprise to the v...

    AL STOVER, Staff Reporter|Updated May 14, 2015

After the May 2 “Fight of the Century” — and by “Fight of the Century” I mean lackluster bout — between Floyd Mayweather and Manny Pacquiao, I was looking forward to a combat sports smorgasbord that included boxing, kickboxing and UFC. One fight I had my eye on was the fight between the “Super Samoan” Mark Hunt and Stipe Miocic in Australia. Miocic is a well-rounded fighter with knockout power and good wrestling skills. In the other corner, there’s Hunt, a former kickboxing world champion who has impressive power and a grani...

The 18-2 Lady Blackhawks now sit back and watch as other league opponents knock each other off in the run to reach the district's title and seeding game to regional action with the Central Washington Athletic Conference. By virtue of their first Great Northern League regular season championship, Cheney has an automatic berth and gets to play the...

  • Blackhawks down East Valley, Clarkston to reach title

    John McCallum, Editor|Updated May 14, 2015

The Cheney High boys' soccer team solved the riddle that was East Valley and found a way to win their second straight playoff game. Four minutes into the first overtime, the third-seeded Knights positioned for a free kick by bringing all of their players up onto Cheney's side of the pitch. The kick missed, and went to the feet of the Blackhawks' Dakota Daniels, who possessed the loose ball about 30 yards outside the Knights goal and dribbled past the defensive line. Daniels...
