  • Still time to register for the annual Blackhawk Scramble

    John McCallum, Managing Editor|Updated May 2, 2019

The 2019 Blackhawk Scramble Golf Tournament is just around the corner, providing supporters of Cheney High School not only the chance to get in 18-rounds of fun followed by a barbecue, but also support local athletics and academics at the same time. The Blackhawk was created 15 years ago and after a brief hiatus, was picked up by the Cheney Kiwanis Club six years ago as a fundraiser to help support the club’s scholarship program. This year’s event takes place Sunday, May 19, at the Fairways Golf Course with an 8 a.m. sho...

    SHANNEN TALBOT, Staff Reporter|Updated May 2, 2019

The Medical Lake soccer team has been part of a back and forth battle this year, losing seven games in a row to kick off the season but coming back hard with just as many subsequent wins. Last week the team took on Deer Park, with the Cardinals (7-8,7-5) trailing by one at the end of the first half. The second half saw the team’s offense return with a vengeance, with Carter Pivonka delivering an assist in the 43rd minute and a goal in the 76th minute that secured the team a 4-2 win. Against Lakeside on April 25, the Cards c...

The Cheney boys golf team has been holding its own on the course, moving steadily up the ranks as the season progresses. Medical Lake at Riverside The Card baseball crew traveled to Nine Mile Falls on Friday, April 26 for an offensive onslaught by both teams that by the end of the day found Medical Lake victorious over the Riverside Rams (2-8, 5-9). But what looked like a sure victory for the Cards for most of the game became a narrow win in the end. “We went into that game looking for a playoff spot,” head coach Austin Sharp said. “If we’d lost there’s a chance we might not make the playoffs....

  • Medical Lake boys tennis notch first season victory

    Lee Hughes, Staff Reporter|Updated May 2, 2019

You win some, you lose some, and the Cardinal boys tennis club managed one of each in regular season play, bringing their Northeast A League record to 1-6 in league play and 1-7 overall for a sixth-place position. The Cards won but a single match when they faced the Riverside Rams across the net on Tuesday, April 23. The Kenady brothers, Brad and Kurtis, were the only victors for the Cards, taking both sets 6-1, 6-1. Calling it a fun match to watch, boy’s head coach Brian T...

The Cheney boys tennis team snapped up a 4-3 win against East Valley on Tuesday, April 23, in an epic comeback that head coach Jesse Erickson said he “will always remember.” Blackhawk player Logan Ray defeated East Valley’s Julien Gunderson 6-1, 6-3 due to what Erickson called “great placement and consistency.” Cheney’s Jared Adams also served up a solid 6-1, 6-1 win against the Knights’ Ethan Graham. In doubles play, Cheney team Mitchell Johnson and Jameson Powell were defeated in a hard-fought 3-6, 2-6 loss to East Valle...

The Cardinal boys downed the visitors 104-26 while the girls dispatched their counterparts 121-11 on a sun-drenched day in Medical Lake. “We had many PRs (personal records); 27 boys PR’d and 18 girls,” head coach Gene Blankenship said in an email. “We had several athletes win more than one event.” Jaxyn Farmen led that category. • Cheney girls fall to East Valley, come back against Clarkston

    SHANNEN TALBOT, Staff Reporter|Updated May 2, 2019

The Cheney girls tennis team is finding that persistence is the name of the game, according to head coach Jeff Ward. The girls faced off against East Valley on Tuesday, April 23 and lost 6-1, but learned a lot in the process, he said. “We’re working on a culture of leadership and improving each point,” Ward said. “We have a really young team mixed with a couple of seniors.” No. 1 singles player Grace Hammermeister defeated East Valley’s Tiffany Phout via forfeit but it wasn’t quite enough to keep the lead. East Valley double...

  • Blackhawks fall in Pullman

    John McCallum, Managing Editor|Updated May 2, 2019

Cheney High School’s baseball team wrapped up its regular season by splitting its final four games 2-2, but it was the two losses that hurt the most. Needing a win against Pullman to seal a Great Northern League title, the Blackhawks came up short in both games of an April 27 doubleheader. Cheney’s late rally fell short in game one — the one that mattered — as the Blackhawks lost 3-2, followed by a 5-1 setback in the nightcap. Pullman hurler Hyatt Utzman scattered three Cheney hits through the first six innings. But in the...

    Lee Hughes, Staff Reporter|Updated May 2, 2019

The Cardinal softball team made some headway in Northwest A League play as this year’s late-starting season moved ahead with strong wins in a doubleheader against Riverside, but two losses to Freeman and Coleville. Medical Lake vs. Freeman Medical Lake took on the fourth place Scotties (5-4, 9-4) on the road on April 16, losing ground quickly in a 12-2 loss that left their batting cold. Freeman came out quick, outscoring the Cards 4-2 in the first inning — and kept on goi...

  • Blackhawks trounce Clarkston track

    John McCallum, Managing Editor|Updated May 2, 2019

How do you know you’re having a good track and field season? Breaking a 31-year-old school record previously set by a National Football League No. 1 pick might be an indication. Cheney High School’s Jacob McGourin accomplished such a feat last Wednesday at home in a Great Northern League dual meet with Clarkston. The senior’s first-place discus throw of 188 feet, 11 inches not only garnered him a new personal record but also broke the school mark set in 1988 by former Blackhaw...

  • Lady Blackhawks sweep Greyhounds

    John McCallum, Managing Editor|Updated May 2, 2019

Sometimes the stats speak for themselves. That’s the tale told in one particular stat from the Cheney High School softball team’s Great Northern League loss last Tuesday, April 23, to visiting league-leader West Valley. The Lady Blackhawks surrendered 22 hits, which is quite a bit, but more impacting were the seven errors that led to a number of unearned Eagle runs in the 19-9 setback. Some of those came in West Valley’s six-run fifth inning that made a 9-6 game all but out o...
