  • National Science Foundation grant will aid EWU STEM students

    PAUL DELANEY, Staff Reporter|Updated May 2, 2014

Attending college can be a big challenge in the first place. But add to that over 40 percent of students at Eastern Washington University are first generation attendees, plus the need for many to work while in school and the outcome can be further daunting. Now, with the help of a $600,000 National Science Foundation grant, students pursuing degrees in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) will have an opportunity to improve their end result — that being b...

  • Dog owners should be more consciences of others

    Updated May 2, 2014

Dogs are starting to become human accessories, tagging along wherever their owner goes. While it is not uncommon to see service dogs in public — because they do act as guides for their owners — some people bring their animals — dogs — to public places, not only the parks and beaches, but also grocery stores and businesses — places where dogs have no reason to be there. Even at events where dogs are prohibited — like Hoopfest — people still bring them, despite the possibility of getting stuck with a fine or being asked t...

  • Saving Cheney train depot is worth finding a fix

    PAUL DELANEY, Staff Reporter|Updated May 2, 2014

I’ve been a train fan for as long as I can recall. Not sure when the bug was planted, but it could have been one Christmas when I got my first Lionel model railroad as a 5-year-old. Or maybe it was when my mother and I hopped a westbound passenger train for what I remember as my first train ride. It was a trip from Spokane all the way to Cheney, all of what, about 20 miles? Funny the things that make impressions on a kid and remain in the memory banks decades later? So as t...

  • All-day kindergarten benefits students and teachers

    AL STOVER, Staff Reporter|Updated May 2, 2014

All-day kindergarten classes seem to be working for the Medical Lake School District. Michael Anderson Elementary School principal Darlene Starr and Hallett Elementary School principal Cindy McSmith gave reports on the progress of all-day kindergarten classes in their schools at the April 22 school board meeting. McSmith explained that doubling the time and changing the curriculum allows teachers to go deeper into lessons and devote more time to students. "We have the...

  • Medical Lake track keeps turning in solid numbers

    PAUL DELANEY, Staff Reporter|Updated May 1, 2014

The road treated the Medical Lake track team pretty well last week. While they didn’t emerge with team victories in either a Northeast A League meet last Wednesday or the Undeberg Invitational at Ritzville, Saturday, the Cardinals continued to put together impressive individual performances. The Cardinals first traveled to Suncrest to compete against Lakeside and Kettle Falls. Lakeside scored an 82-63 boy’s victory while Medical Lake got a 91-44 win over Kettle Falls. ML...

  • Too little offense, defense dooms Cardinals

    PAUL DELANEY, Staff Reporter|Updated May 1, 2014

Too much rain, not enough runs, too little hitting and more than their share of errors. That sums up the abbreviated baseball week for Medical Lake. The Cardinals went from challenging Freeman for a second consecutive Northeast A League title to now scrambling for playoff positioning as the season enters its final two weeks. After rain washed out a Tuesday game at Newport, Medical Lake (7-5 NEA, 8-5 overall) faced off against Freeman (12-0, 12-1) losing a doubleheader 9-2 and...

  • Medical Lake gets the hits in sweep of Freeman

    PAUL DELANEY, Staff Reporter|Updated May 1, 2014

Medical Lake stayed in the hunt for a high seed in the upcoming Northeast A League softball playoffs, and maintained their mathematical chances at catching league-leading Lakeside with a 2-0 week. The Cardinals (9-3 NEA, 10-3 overall) got two impressive offensive performances in scoring wins of 10-3 and 16-13 over Freeman (3-9, 3-10) last Friday at home. A Tuesday contest at Newport was rained out but rescheduled for Friday, May 2. Medical Lake’s long-ball bats propelled t...

  • Lakeside still has Medical Lake's soccer number, sweeps Cards

    PAUL DELANEY, Staff Reporter|Updated May 1, 2014

Lakeside continues to have Medical Lake’s number and it’s a problem that has Cardinals’ head coach Zane Higgins scratching his head for an answer. The Eagles (6-1 NEA, 11-2 overall) scored a 5-0 Northeast A League victory last Thursday to cap a sweep of the season series between the two schools, winning 3-0, 7-2 in previous meetings, outscoring the Cards 15-2 in the three matches. Medical Lake (4-3, 8-6) did get a couple of victories, however, 3-2 over Riverside last Tuesd...

Cheney’s boys and girls track and field teams continued a busy schedule with a pair of meets last week. The Blackhawks traveled north to Deer Park for a Great Northern League meet Thursday with the Stags and East Valley, and wrapped up the week with the annual Mooberry Relays Saturday at Rogers High School in Spokane. No team scores were available at press time for the GNL meet. Individually the Cheney girls were led by Kinsey Pease’s first-place finish in the javelin with a toss of 120 feet, 9 inches. AL STOVER, Staff Reporter|Updated May 1, 2014

The Blackhawks first defeated East Valley to pick up their first league win of the season, 5-2. Cheney swept East Valley in singles competition. AL STOVER, Staff Reporter|Updated May 1, 2014

The Cheney high school boys’ tennis team had a roller coaster of a week as they went 2-1 in competition. The Blackhawks began the week by winning a tough Great Northern League duel against East Valley, 4-3. Britton Williams picked up the only singles win for the Blackhawks as he beat the Knights’ Brenton Goodwater. “Britton looked really strong,” Cheney High boys’ tennis head coach Jesse Erickson said. “He played to his strengths and attacked the net. He’s a tall guy, so it’s hard for opponents to get the ball past him....

  • Lady Hawks swept by Deer Park, sweep Clarkston in tightening GNL race

    John McCallum, Editor|Updated May 1, 2014

Twice last week, Cheney High's softball doubleheader with Clarkston was postponed due to weather. Perhaps that was a good thing because after getting handled by Deer Park in a doubleheader last Friday, the Lady Hawks returned to their winning ways and got this week off to a good start with their own sweep of the visiting Bantams Monday. Julia Boyd gave up no earned runs while striking out 10 in Cheney's five-inning, 12-2 game one win. The junior gave herself some offensive...

  • Schimandle goal carries Cheney

    John McCallum, Editor|Updated May 1, 2014

National League Hockey great Wayne Gretsky once said "You miss 100 percent of the shots you don't take." Cheney High School boys' soccer coaches Mark Kiver and Matt Pollack keep using the quote to remind the Blackhawks to keep shooting the ball as often as possible. It's a work in progress, but it's work that paid off last Thursday against East Valley. The Blackhawks only shot the ball nine times against the visiting fourth-place Knights (4-6, 4-7, 14 points), missing several...

  • It's not just about Donald Sterling's race issue

    John McCallum, Editor|Updated May 1, 2014

What does one say about this whole issue with Los Angeles Clippers owner Donald Sterling and his alleged racist remarks? I’ve listened to the audio recordings first released by TMZ. They’re disgusting in a myriad of ways, and I’ll not sully this column by repeating them here. Go listen for yourself. There is also the matter of how the recordings came about, secretly and likely illegally taped by Sterling’s mistress, V. Stiviano (if that IS her real name). TMZ is a nine-year-old celebrity/entertainment news site – read slea...
