  • Big defensive plays dominate EWU scrimmage

    NEWS SERVICE REPORTS|Updated Apr 25, 2013

There were big plays all around for the Eagle defense, and a whole lot of tackles by senior All-America linebacker Ronnie Hamlin. Hamlin had 11 tackles, a sack and returned an interception for a touchdown to set the tone early for the Eastern Washington University football team last Saturday in an 88-play scrimmage at Roos Field. The Eagles marked the mid-point of spring practice with the situational scrimmage, which has become a spring staple of the Eagles and head coach Beau Baldwin. Baldwin wasn’t overly concerned about t...

  • Blackhawks face challenges in wins over Spokane Valley schools

    John McCallum, Editor|Updated Apr 25, 2013

Last week’s contests on the pitch at East Valley and West Valley finally gave the Cheney High boys soccer team something they needed – a challenge. The Blackhawks faced a physical second-place Knights team looking to edge closer in the standings Tuesday, matching their physicality for a 3-1 win. Thursday Cheney overcame lethargic play and an upset-minded Eagles team for a 3-0 win, running their winning streak to eight, unbeaten in Great Northern League play at 10-0, 11-2 ove...

  • McDowell no-hits Clarkston, Lady Hawks move into fourth

    John McCallum, Editor|Updated Apr 25, 2013

Cheney High’s softball team played perhaps their best overall game last Tuesday in a 10-0 win over visiting Clarkston. Megan McDowell hurled a no-hitter against the Bantams, allowing just three walks while striking out six. Head coach Gary Blake said the sophomore demonstrated good control of her pitches, throwing 68 percent first pitch strikes and was pretty much always ahead in the count. “It makes your pitches all that more effective,” Blake said. Offensively the Lady Hawks...

  • Shining Star performance is appreciated

    Updated Apr 25, 2013

Kudos goes to Lavertta Lawrence and her Shining Star Theatre Ensemble. My husband and I thoroughly appreciate the two hours we enjoyed watching “Peter Pan” on Saturday evening at Cheney Middle School. The production was well done, clearly a labor of love highlighted by a most enthusiastic cast. Geoff Stevenson was the most loveable Captain Hook I have ever seen. We are looking forward to future shows and encouraging the community to join us. Thank you Lavertta and crew. Mary Robinson Cheney...

  • Learning the value of silence

    David Sirota, Columnist|Updated Apr 25, 2013

Can you hear yourself think? Can you manage more than bursts of confusion and anger? Can you feel your own humanity anymore? I’ll admit it — I’ve had trouble this week, too. After an explosion like the one in Boston, it is indeed hard to hear one’s own internal monologue, much less meditate on such horrific events. Polluting that sacred quiet of the mind is both the haunting boom of the bombs themselves and even worse, the noisy coda that we’ve become so accustomed to. Sensory overload, of course, is the deafening effect of...

  • Who cares what the majority wants on guns?

    David Harsanyi, Columnist|Updated Apr 25, 2013

President Barack Obama has been struggling to wrap his head around the “unimaginable” idea that Congress may “defy” the American people and stop a vote on a gun control package compromise. The notion, he says, resists the “overwhelming instinct of the American people” after the massacre in Newtown, Conn., to pass gun control legislation. Well, the unthinkable happened. The Senate’s sweeping gun legislation came up short on the votes required to move forward. And despite all the idealistic calls for passage and despite the f...

  • Be sensible with animal limits

    Updated Apr 25, 2013

The article “Contemplating a Community Farm,” in The Cheney Free Press of April 18, states, “A proposed addition to Cheney’s zoning codes might make it easier for individuals to keep and raise farm animals and bees within city limits.” That is true for large animals, which are currently prohibited on lots smaller than two acres. On the other hand, it is not true for those who raise chickens, rabbits, and other small animals, which are currently allowed in R-1 and R-2 zones, without a cap on numbers. The code as it stands wi...

  • Bi-Mart hasn't enhanced creek

    Updated Apr 25, 2013

I don’t know Edward Tompson but I could give him a big hug. Yes, I went to all those planning commission meetings and heard the same plans for the creek. I thought Bi-Mart’s building permit was a temporary permit allowed if the approved plan to move Minnie Creek to the back of the property was completed in a short time. Most of us thought it was a great plan that would enhance the creek. Many of us have come to realize that temporary in Cheney is often long term. But now it is time that this development adheres to the per...

  • Ice Age Floods Trail tourism could benefit region

    Updated Apr 25, 2013

In 2009 the Ice Age Floods Geologic Trail became reality through the federal Omnibus Public Land Management Act. The Act gave responsibility for overseeing creation of the trail, which stretches from northwestern Montana through North Idaho, Eastern Washington and the Columbia Basin down the Columbia Gorge to the Pacific Ocean, to the National Park Service. But unlike most other acts of its kind, it provided none of the estimated $8 million to $12 million needed for the task. Instead, local Ice Age Floods Institute chapters...

She even attended theater camps, inclu...

  • Cheney girls' tennis continues to grow with favorable schedule ahead

    JAMES EIK, Staff Reporter|Updated Apr 25, 2013

Ending a string of tough scheduling, the Cheney girls’ tennis team is coming off a few close losses. But, easier opportunities are right around the corner. Losses to Pullman, East Valley, Colville and West Valley left a sting, but the team has played well throughout, head coach Jason Overland said. “I am very happy with how the girls played against Pullman,” he said. Although losing 6-1 against Pullman, the team was able to rebound two days later against East Valley, falling only by 4-3. After that match, Overland said the g...

  • Mixed week for Cheney boys' tennis

    JAMES EIK, Staff Reporter|Updated Apr 25, 2013

The Cheney High School boys’ tennis team had its shares of ups and downs last week, having mixed results. Against North Central, the team won 5-2, facing some tough competition along the way. “It was a really solid victory for us,” head coach Jesse Erickson said. No. 1 singles Tyler Bennett was unable to overcome North Central’s Justin Clawson and fell scoreless for the day. “The effort was there,” Erickson said. “I knew coming in his opponent was a strong player, but he was definitely trying his hardest.” Overall, the te...

  • Brown, Clark set new CHS track marks

    John McCallum, Editor|Updated Apr 25, 2013

The Cheney girls’ track and field team experienced an historic moment last Thursday as a pair of school records were set – Chae Brown in the triple jump at 37 feet, 7 inches and Erin Clark in the pole vault at 11-06. That was on the shiny side of the dual meet coin with visiting East Valley and Deer Park. On the other side, the Blackhawk girls suffered their first Great Northern League dual meet loss in five years, losing 85-65 to the Knights, but easily out pointing the Stags, 97-53. “The girls competed well, and East Valle...

  • Inexperienced Blackhawk boys battle in track and field arena

    John McCallum, Editor|Updated Apr 25, 2013

Despite being down in numbers, Cheney High boys track and field head coach Todd Hering said the 2013 Blackhawks have very good individual performers and a group of inexperienced athletes that are “knocking on the door” with some promise as the season develops. The Blackhawks are led by seniors Calvin Berstler, Eric Igbinoba and Jesse Hallstrom. Berstler has been doing well in the 110 and 300 hurdles, posting the sixth and seventh fastest 2A state times this season. Igbinoba has been consistently over 42 feet in the tri...

  • Freebies cost Cheney key league games

    John McCallum, Editor|Updated Apr 25, 2013

In baseball, free passes almost always come back to haunt a team. That was true for the Blackhawks as walks and inopportune mistakes led to an 8-5 home loss to Clarkston last Tuesday and a 4-3 loss Saturday in the nightcap of a doubleheader at Deer Park. On the bright side Cheney’s bats came alive last week to produce 33 hits, including 16 in a 9-2 win in the Deer Park opener. Austin Harding led the way at the plate in the win with four hits, including a pair of doubles, and 5 RBIs. Tanner Smith added three hits, Josh A...

In a 5-1 vote, the Medical Lake City Council agreed to move forward with discussions regarding Spokane County’s Joint Land Use Study and its potential implementation in the city limits. The vote was scheduled to take place at its meeting earlier this month, however final verification from the county was needed before it could proceed. Councilwoman Brenda Redell voted against the motion. All property in Medical Lake, according to the mutual agreements in the memorandum of understanding, is grandfathered in under JLUS. If a r...

  • Cheney police benefit from regional task force

    John McCallum, Editor|Updated Apr 25, 2013

When Spokane County Sheriff Ozzie Knezovich asked the Cheney Police Department to join the newly created regional Property Crime Task Force, Police Chief John Hensley knew the reason for joining wasn’t because of problems. “We’re involved in this because we want to be a part of the solution in this region,” Hensley said. Knezovich announced the creation of the task force April 3, linking the resources of law enforcement agencies in the cities of Cheney, Airway Heights, Spokane and Liberty Lake with forces in Spokane and Koo...

  • Growing a little clout

    JAMES EIK, Staff Reporter|Updated Apr 25, 2013

For the past 10 years, Airway Heights has been one of only a few thousand cities in the United States to receive a Tree City USA award. To make it 10 years in a row, however, carries some clout with it. J.C. Kennedy, parks, recreation and community services director, said applying for the award is an annual goal for the department. Only 3,400 cities across the country receive the award each year. In an effort to highlight the achievement, the city applied for a grant offered by the Washington State Department of Natural...

  • Council seeks impact fee bill veto

    John McCallum, Editor|Updated Apr 25, 2013

Cheney’s City Council unanimously agreed to sign a letter from the Association of Washington Cities asking Gov. Jay Inslee to veto a bill that would change how local governments collect development impact fees – fees necessary in many cases to help jurisdictions keep pace with growth generated by the very development on which those fees are assessed. Engrossed Substitute House Bill (ESHB) 1652 would mandate all local governments, big and small, rural and urban, defer collection of impact fees required under the Growth Managem...
