  • Medical Lake boys get wins and barbecue

By PAUL DELANEY Staff Reporter It was a mixed bag of competition that included playing mixed-doubles in Idaho, but the Medical Lake boys' tennis team came out of last week with two wins and a loss with a little barbecue thrown in on the side. The Cardinals scored a 6-1 non-league victory at Post Falls last Tuesday, were beaten 5-2 at Lewis and Clark of the Greater Spokane League and then topped Deer Park 6-1 in a Great Northern League match on the road. The week was capped with a trip back to Idaho and a match at Lake City...

  • Cardinals enter crucial games in Great Northern soccer play

By PAUL DELANEY Staff Reporter The timing may be just right for Medical Lake's soccer team as they meet both Pullman and Cheney in the same week. Because admit it or not, this is the time when the Cards would love to deliver a little payback. Winners of three straight and six of their last eight games – their only losses coming by similar 2-1 scores to both the Blackhawks and Greyhounds – Cardinals' head coach Zane Higgins appears quietly confident. The Cheney game was decided in a shootout. “Right now we're playing our b...

  • Get outside to enjoy spring's slow, amazing approach

By BECKY THOMAS Staff Reporter Things on the world stage aren't looking exactly rosy lately. Heck, things aren't looking great on stages smaller than that. It's easy to get caught up in the budget crises, natural disasters and political unrest that seem to be circling all around us. Ultimately though, sometimes it's necessary to disconnect from all that and take notice of the world around us. Despite its slow start, man, am I excited about spring. I think now is a good time for everyone to take a moment and get outside to wit...

  • In Our Opinion: The war on school lunches is a losing battle

We've fought many wars over the course of history in America. There have been those where we battled abroad and were seen as necessary for our survival - and those deemed dubious. On the home-front there have also been numerous domestic battlefronts. The war on poverty and war on drugs come to mind. And like other foreign wars there will be those who can attest to the successes and those who counter their worth. There's a new war being fought in the country to combat childhood obesity and one of the first skirmishes comes in...

  • Letters to the Editor

Nation not entitled to wealth of individuals, corporations I read with interest Ryan Lancaster's “budget discussion” (“Budget discussion falls silent on tax rates of the rich,” April 14). Our nation is broke “out of money.” It is spending way more than it collects in revenue. His solution is tax the corporations and the wealthy. He seems to think he is entitled to what they earned. Individual wealth and corporate wealth does not belong to the nation. It belongs to those who earn it. The “nation” only takes it by force the sa...

  • For Cheney baseball, titles may be nice, but good post-season position more realistic

By JOHN McCALLUM Editor Despite going 2-2 in last week's games the Cheney baseball team still finds itself in the hunt for a top spot in the coming Great Northern League playoffs. They may have to settle for missing a third straight league championship, but for Blackhawks manager Randy Elam, achieving that goal isn't the only reason they play the games. “If we don't finish at the top, big deal,” he said. “It's not that important. We'll get into the playoffs, these are just practice games, but the cool thing is, we contr...

  • Lady Hawks' ‘firsts' fail to lead to West Valley's first loss

By JOHN McCALLUM Editor The Cheney Lady Hawks softball team notched several firsts in their home doubleheader with Great Northern League leader West Valley last Saturday. When Samee Silvieus scored the game's first run in the first inning, helped by an Eagles' error, Cheney became the first team to score on West Valley since Pullman on March 26 and the first team to lead the Eagles since Colville's 1-0 margin in a non-league game March 18. One inning later when Katie Bethel doubled to score Amy Anderson the Lady Hawks...

  • West Valley hands Cheney boys first GNL tennis loss

By JOHN McCALLUM Editor The bad news for the Cheney boys' tennis team is their return from spring break saw their five-match winning streak snapped as they experienced their first loss in Great Northern League play. The good news is the Blackhawks didn't have to wait long to get back into the win column, and they won't have long to wait to get a shot at avenging Tuesday's loss at West Valley. The Eagles and Blackhawks engaged in a good old-fashioned slugfest, racket-style, with several matches going three sets and coming...

  • Blackhawks drop to fourth in GNL soccer with loss at Pullman

By JOHN McCALLUM Editor For 30 minutes last Saturday in Pullman Cheney boys' soccer head coach Mark Kiver said his team played some of the most consistent and dominating soccer they've played all season. But after that the wheels came off the Blackhawks wagon. Up 2-0, Cheney gave up three straight goals, including the game-winner in the 62nd minute, to fall 3-2 to the Greyhounds, and in the process dropped into fourth place in the Great Northern League standings. “Pullman played a good game,” Kiver said Monday night. “We made...

  • Crunch Time for April 21, 2010

Champion Eastern's spring football has different feel to it this year By PAUL DELANEY Staff Reporter It's not just the weather that insists on doing its best imitation of late fall – OK sometimes more early winter – that makes this year's Eastern Washington University spring football practices seem different. Maybe it's winning the Football Championship Subdivision national championship less than three months ago, or the fact that scrimmages are now held on the Red turf at Roos Field that distance things from last year's lon...

Hawks off to good start with wins over GNL's Valley schools By JOHN McCALLUM Editor Cheney's boys' track team opened their run for a third straight Great Northern League title in successful fashion last Thursday, downing East Valley and West Valley in the first league meet of the season. The Blackhawks had little trouble knocking off either school, beating East Valley 80.33 to 64.66 while handing the host Eagles an 89-56 setback. “The guys competed hard and stepped up,” Cheney head coach Todd Hering said. “They showed why t...
