  • Eagles show off ground game in first spring scrimmage

    PAUL DELANEY, Staff Reporter|Updated Apr 18, 2013

The calendar said April. The weather and some of the play on the field was a bit more like November. That was a quick snapshot from last Saturday’s 45-play scrimmage at blustery, cold – and sometimes snowy – Roos Field. It was the first time coaches and players have gotten to test themselves in something other than drills during Eastern Washington University’s spring football practice. They’ll go at it this Saturday with another scrimmage following a 10:30 a.m. start to...

After an undefeated previous week Medical Lake softball fell in a pair of Northeast A League games 14-4 at Riverside and 16-7 at home to Lakeside. A nine-run second inning set the tone at Riverside. After Medical Lake cut it to 9-3 with three runs in the top of the third, the Rams matched that for a 12-3 lead. Medical Lake was limited to six hits including triples Rachel Stanfill and Kayla Pruitt. Lakeside also had a fast start by scoring eight runs in the top of the first...

  • Cardinal soccer keeps trying to play catch-up

    PAUL DELANEY, Staff Reporter|Updated Apr 18, 2013

Despite losing their head-to-head meeting last week, Medical Lake was still able to at least keep the pressure on Lakeside for the Northeast A League soccer championship. A two win, one loss week that included a 10-1 rout of Riverside last Tuesday, followed by a 5-2 loss to Lakeside and a 2-1 victory over Newport gives Medical Lake a 3-2 NEA record. The Cardinals get another chance to gain ground this week with rematches at Riverside this past Tuesday and hosting Lakeside...

  • Cheney boys win, lose, get rained out

    JAMES EIK, Staff Reporter|Updated Apr 18, 2013

The Cheney High School boys’ tennis team saw it all last week: a win, loss and a rainout. The team struggled in its match against Pullman, losing 7-0 against one of the Great Northern League’s top teams. Scores for Cheney were on the lower end, however the games were much closer than scores indicated. Head coach Jesse Erickson said Solomon Springberry, who lost 1-6 and 1-6, was being aggressive throughout his match, but couldn’t capitalize on several close games. He said the same thing went for Ryan Axtell, who lost 3-6 and 4...

  • Blackhawks rally for 5-4 GNL win in Pullman

    John McCallum, Editor|Updated Apr 18, 2013

Cheney High’s baseball team went 1-2 in Great Northern League action last week – with all three games decided by one run and last inning rallies. The Blackhawks fell behind 4-2 in the first inning at Pullman (fifth, 2-8, 2-9) Tuesday as starting pitcher Tanner “Bubba” Smith struggled, allowing four runs before the first out was made. The sophomore found his groove to end the threat by striking out the side and not giving up another run the rest of the way. Cheney clawed its way back with runs in the fourth and fifth inning...

Medical Lake’s girls’ tennis team ended last week’s return to competition with a pair of close non-league losses, 4-3 to West Valley last Tuesday and 3-2 at Lind-Ritzville-Sprague Thursday.
