  • Of bird songs and human speech

    Dr E KIRSTEN PETERS, Contributor|Updated Apr 4, 2013

There are two features of this time of year that make my heart glad. One is the rapidly increasing length of the day. In September we lose daylight quickly, but in the spring we gain it all back just as rapidly. Although the same pattern is repeated each year (so you’d think I’d be used to it) I’m always somehow surprised and delighted when we get to this time of year and have early sunrises and spreading daylight in the evenings. The other part of this time of year that gladdens my soul is the singing of birds. Start...

In the 1880s settlers began to move into this area. About 35 families established homes in what would become Turnbull Wildlife Refuge. President Franklin Roosevelt in 1937 declared 16,000 acres of marshes, wetlands and lakes as the Turnbull National Wildlife Refuge. The farmers who already lived on the property spent a lot of time draining the swampland. They planted and sold hay, hunted and hauled freight. In 1941 Charlie Proctor became Turnbull’s first manager. Charlie, h...

  • Competition is keen for ML girls tennis

    PAUL DELANEY, Staff Reporter|Updated Apr 4, 2013

With a huge number of players graduating, there will be many new faces on Medical Lake‘s girls’ tennis team in 2013 head coach Dawn Eliassen reports. “We graduated eight last year, so we have very few returning varsity players,” Eliassen said. The team now has just two seniors (Amy Ryan and Katie Larkin) and a junior (Becky Nix) in the top-10. The current No. 1 singles player is sophomore Rachel Hansen, a transfer from Reardan. But competition has been fierce across a group of...

  • Justin Blayne is back to lead Medical Lake tennis

    PAUL DELANEY, Staff Reporter|Updated Apr 4, 2013

The new direction of Medical Lake boy’s tennis has an old face attached to it. No, Leroy Lemaster did not rescind his latest effort at retirement following the 2012 season. Back at the helm is Justin Blayne, the former Cardinal multi-sport athlete who was the last guy to take over when Lemaster stepped down from the head-coaching job in 2008. Blayne left both the tennis and girls’ basketball jobs in 2010 to first enter private business and later to coach at Rosalia. But thi...

  • Lady Hawks rally for split at East Valley

    John McCallum, Editor|Updated Apr 4, 2013

Cheney softball head coach Gary Blake believes that if his team started games stronger, they might not have to play so furiously later on. The Lady Hawks gave up 19 runs in going 1-2 last week, 14 of which came in the first two innings against Deer Park at home Tuesday and in a doubleheader Saturday at East Valley. Cheney tried to rally but couldn’t in the first two of those three games, losing 4-2 to the Stags and 8-2 to East Valley in game one. In game two, after falling behind 6-0 after two the Lady Hawks got three in t...

Their first match against West Valley Tuesday, March 26, turned out to be a difficult one, where the team lost 6-1, similar to a loss against Mt. Spokane the week before. Indeed it was as Cheney stretched its league-leading mark to 6-0, improving to 7-2 overall. PAUL DELANEY, Staff Reporter|Updated Apr 4, 2013

Medical Lake head track coach Gene Blankenship is content with a slow start because he’s quite confident his team will finish strong. So with that in mind he’s not worried his star sprinter – Amarah Nicholson – and the future of his distance running – Micah Dingfield – both sophomores, are a little slow in the early going. Medical Lake has three meets under its collective boys’ and girls’ belts, the most recent last Saturday at the Deer Park Invitational. Even with spring bre...
