  • Cardinal baseball has tough task in replacing four all-league performers

By NEIL PIERSON Staff Reporter Medical Lake's baseball program is coming off a successful 2006 season in which it finished 13-9 and earned a share of the Great Northern League title. This season's team, however, will be working without five talented seniors lost to graduation. Gone is All-GNL first team pitcher Ryan Reitmeier and three second team choices—first baseman Kyle Erickson, pitcher Jon O'Connor and outfielder Justin Propeck. ML starts over at many positions this spring. First-year skipper T.J. Smith is working with...

  • Hamilton's shadow too large for Eastern

By JOHN McCALLUM Editor I don't know about you, but to me the circumstances surrounding the termination of Eastern Washington University athletics director Darren Hamilton's contract after only seven months on the job are just a little confusing. It's one of those things that make me want to shake my head fiercely while saying, “aye, aye, aye, aye, aye, aye.” (By the way, if you do that, please sit down, and have a bottle of ibuprofen handy.) Allegations of sexual harassment, mixed with complaints about Hamilton's man...

  • ML track features new faces

By NEIL PIERSON Staff Reporter Medical Lake track and field coach Phil Tennison has a lot to be excited about this season. Four athletes with state meet experience return to guide the boys team. The girls team has doubled in size, with 25 athletes figuring to see varsity action. And while there's a host of new faces on both squads, Tennison sees plenty of athleticism and resilience that could pay off for the Cardinals. Junior Ty Souders returns in the 400 meters, where he finished fourth in the state last season. Perhaps the...

  • Weller, Zakrzewski lead offense, defense spectacular in three Cheney wins

By MIKE HUFFMAN Staff Reporter Sure, it's still early in the season. But there's no reason to doubt that this year's version of the Cheney Blackhawks boys soccer team will be anything short of a monster. The proof is right there in the stats. Three contests into the inaugural Great Northern League season, and Cheney has yet to give up a single goal. And after an 8-0 win over Colville on Saturday and a 10-0 victory over Clarkston last Thursday, last Tuesday's 2-0 victory over Medical Lake could almost be considered something... Full story

  • Cheney baseball likes its chances to reach postseason

By JOHN McCALLUM Editor Cheney High School baseball coach Randy Elam has a simple formula for success. “Our goal is to win more games than we lose,” Elam said, echoing a similar statement by former Seattle Mariners' managing great, Lou Piniella. “I think if we do that, we make the playoffs,” Elam added. The Blackhawks took a big step, albeit not one on their own initiative, toward improvement last year when the Washington Interscholastic Activities Association, through reclassification, knocked Cheney down a notch to 2A and...

  • CHS tennis looks for fresh start in GNL

By MIKE HUFFMAN Staff Reporter There's no denying it: The Cheney boys tennis team has it's work cut out. Not only did last year's graduating class take with it the bulk of the squad, but powerhouse Clarkston also has made the transition to the Great Northern League with Cheney. Still, nothing is ever gained without a little adversity. And coach Jesse Erickson said that last Thursday's debut outing for the Blackhawks (an earlier meeting with Clarkston was scrubbed and rescheduled for April 10) showed the team has great... Full story

  • ML softball downplaying expectations

By NEIL PIERSON Staff Reporter With six starters returning to a team that went 20-8 last season, you'd think expectations for the Medical Lake softball team would be through the roof. That's not the case. Head coach John Higgins, who announced his retirement last spring but ended up returning for season No. 15 at the Lady Cardinals' helm, still thinks he has a great team. But with the regular season starting this week, he's not ready to give his squad a free pass into the 2A state tournament. “I think the potential is t... Full story

  • Westfall named interim A.D.

By NEIL PIERSON Staff Reporter Eastern Washington University wanted to move quickly in its search for a new athletics director, and it did so Tuesday afternoon with the interim hiring of Michael Westfall. Five days after Darren Hamilton's contract was terminated, Westfall was introduced during a short press conference at Reese Court. Westfall came to EWU last November as the vice president for university advancement and will remain in that role while serving as the interim AD. “I see myself as being the eyes and the ears t...

  • Hamilton dismissed as Eastern's athletic director

By NEIL PIERSON Staff Reporter When Dr. Darren Hamilton came to Eastern Washington University last August, he proclaimed loud and clear that the athletics department was “going to be extraordinarily successful.” After less than seven months on the job, however, Hamilton won't be the one to resurrect the Eagles. The university announced his dismissal as athletics director last Thursday, citing a need to change directions. In a March 16 Spokesman-Review report, Hamilton said the decision to terminate his contract was made aft... Full story

  • Funding for new Cheney officer could jeopardize ability to pay training costs

By JOHN McCALLUM Editor A $56,000 budget adjustment implemented last month to fund a new patrol officer for the Cheney Police Department may end up negatively impacting the department's ability to provide ongoing training for its officers. City officials used $16,000 in department money scraped from five accounts in order to help fund Police Chief Jeff Sale's request to hire one new officer in time to fill a training academy slot. That officer, Shawn Hobbs, joined the department on March 1, but will spend six months at the...

  • Crash landing

County moves to limit development near Fairchild and Spokane airport By MIKE HUFFMAN Staff Reporter In a rare Friday afternoon gathering – though Todd Mielke attended via speakerphone – Spokane County commissioners closed a zoning loophole that allowed for building near Spokane International Airport and Fairchild Air Force Base. The move keeps development from occurring in “crash zones” around both airfields. And, in the case of Fairchild, removes one more possible reason for the federal government to close the Air Force b...

  • City council approves return of popular Cheney Hangout

Eastern Washington University to run programs while city maintains and funds teen center By JOHN McCALLUM Editor The Cheney City Council gave its stamp of approval for the return of the Cheney Hangout, a popular teen center that closed down last spring due to space issues and conflicts associated with its location in Eastern Washington University's Brewster Hall. The council passed a resolution at its March 13 meeting authorizing Mayor Allan Gainer to sign an interlocal agreement with EWU for equipping and running the...

  • Four Lakes residences enters 22nd year as solar energy powerhouse

By CARA LORELLO Staff Reporter Bill Wynd is what most would call environmentally conscious, and a visit to his 50-acre residence near Four Lakes, a few miles south of the busy lanes of Interstate 90, indicates that this is quite true. Much of his home's acreage is rehabilitation property protected under a federal conservation reserve program (CRP), in which landowners raise and maintain a certain number of plant and wildlife species on designated parcels rented from the government for up to 10 years at a time. The vegetation...

  • CHS girls drop tennis outing at Pullman

By MIKE HUFFMAN Staff Reporter Senior Jenna Donnerberg was the only Lady Hawk to have any luck against a tenacious Pullman tennis squad last Thursday. In the Cheney girls' opener—planned matches against Clarkston have been rescheduled for April 10—the Hawks were defeated by the Greyhounds 6-1, with Donnerberg getting a victory at No. 1 singles. Donnerberg bested Raquel Marcelo of Pullman 6-3, 6-2. In No. 1 doubles, Greyhounds Amy Wells and Stacey Field brought down seniors Bridget Hammes and Brittney Gallagher 6-2, 6-1. The... Full story

  • Hawk golfers shooting for top of GNL leaderboard

By JOHN McCALLUM Editor Cheney High School's boys and girls golf teams swung into action last week with high hopes for the coming season—their first in the 2A classification and the Great Northern League. Both teams return some experienced players, but are also squads with a couple of holes. The boys are a relatively young team, at least as far as class standing is concerned. Two of the 12 Blackhawks are seniors, Andy Ifft and Jason Frost, and each have at least one year of solid varsity action. Head coach Jeff Pike b...

  • Medical Lake boys accept new roles, split matches with Tigers, Stags

By NEIL PIERSON Staff Reporter Even without its star player, the Medical Lake boys tennis team racked up some solid results last week. With No. 1 seed Max Nelson out of the singles lineup due to illness, the Cardinals did a little shuffling in a non-league match at Lewis and Clark and the Great Northern League opener at Deer Park. While LC, one of the Greater Spokane League's traditional powers, managed to eke out a 4-3 victory, the Cards' revamped lineup buried the Stags 6-1. “We had some good matches,” ML coach Leroy Lemast... Full story
