  • Spelling bees? Dog shows? Where will it all end (up on TV)?

By JOHN McCALLUM Editor Years ago, the oddball sports stuff was what you would see on ABC's “Wide World of Sports.” You know. Bowling, pool (OK, billiards if you must), contests that are better classified as games of skill rather than sports, which I think should require some sort of physical exertion other than rolling a ball down a lane in really ugly shoes, or creating a callous by trying to put a little extra English on a cue ball. There were probably other games of skill that didn't make it onto WWS back then simply bec...

By JOHN McCALLUM Editor The Cheney American Legion AA baseball team saw its record slip to 5-3 last week by suffering three losses in five games, two coming in the Summer Hawks tournament last weekend. • Politicians and generals make strange bedfellows

One thing about the secretary of defense, Robert Gates, is he doesn't pull any punches. Calling a last-minute news conference to announce that he wouldn't send the chairman of the Joints Chief of Staff, Gen. Peter Pace, to the hill for consideration for a second term as chairman was not unexpected. The old adage that “politics make strange bedfellows” can now be changed to “politics and general officers make strange bedfellows.” The first Marine to be selected for the nation's top military post, a “boots on the ground” V...
