    Updated Jan 31, 2019

  • Not too much excitement for this year's big game

    John McCallum, Managing Editor|Updated Jan 31, 2019

I will not be watching this Sunday’s Super Bowl. That is probably a first for me, but more one of logistics than anything else. This Sunday we’ll be driving back from Southern California after a quick trip to visit my wife’s mother and family, so watching the road is the order of the day. We’ll tune in the game on Sirius XM. See how that works for commercials. Even if there wasn’t a road trip in store over Super Bowl weekend, I’m not so sure I’d be as enthusiastic about one of the biggest events each year in our national spor...

  • Lady Blackhawks fall short at home in Clarkston upset

    John McCallum, Managing Editor|Updated Jan 31, 2019

Cheney High’s girls basketball team almost found a way to pull off an upset of the state’s seventh-ranked 2A team last Tuesday. The Lady Blackhawks fell behind early at home against Great Northern League leader Clarkston on Jan. 22, trailing 14-4 after the first eight minutes of play. But they rallied, outscoring the Bantams 20-11 in the third quarter to tie the game at 37 before fading down the home stretch in the 59-49 loss. Aijia Loffredi led Cheney in scoring with 16 points, with fellow senior Haley Pemberton adding 11....

  • Cardinal boys drop another on the road

    Lee Hughes, Staff Reporter|Updated Jan 31, 2019

The Medical Lake boys’ basketball crew lost on the road 76-61 against the NEA leading Deer Park (10-1, 18-1) on Friday. The Cards fell to 4-6 in Northeast A after a two-game winning streak on the road. “We found ourselves trying to dig out of a 25-7 first quarter hole on their Senior Night,” head coach Noel Hachtel said. “To add to the drama, Deer Park was also playing for their first-ever league championship.” From the tipoff, the Deer Park defense kept the Cards from scor...

  • Cold-shooting Blackhawks boys fall to Bantams

    John McCallum, Managing Editor|Updated Jan 31, 2019

Poor shooting and allowing their opponents too many easy points sent the Cheney High boys basketball team to a Great Northern League loss last Tuesday night against visiting Clarkston. The formula led to an early seven-point Blackhawks deficit after one quarter and they never found their way back in the 60-48 setback to the league-leading, visiting Bantams. Cheney head coach Gregg Smith said the Blackhawks shot 33 percent overall from the field, with just nine assists. The Bantams on the other hand pulled down 12 offensive...

  • Cardinal pride on the line in Deer Park victory

    Lee Hughes, Staff Reporter|Updated Jan 31, 2019

The Medical Lake girls basketball squad took it right to Deer Park (7-4, 14-5) in a slap-down 58-38 win in front of the Stag home crowd Friday night at Deer Park High School. Their Cardinal pride was on the line, according to head coach Kyle Lundberg. “After losing at home to them, which resulted in our first league loss in 32 league games, they wanted to prove that it was just a fluke that they lost the last time,” Lundberg said. And prove it was a fluke they did. The Car...

And when complimented on the delicious food coming out of her kitchen, she just smiles, waves a hand and says, “It’s not bad, huh?” Not bad is an und...
