    James Eik, Staff Reporter|Updated Jan 10, 2013

The year started quietly for the Airway Heights City Council in its first meeting of 2013, with only two action items on the Monday, Jan. 7 agenda. Airway Heights was recently awarded grand funding from the Transportation Improvement Board for pedestrian sidewalk improvements along Highway 2 from Garfield Road to Deer Heights Road. City Manager Albert Tripp said the city was eligible to receive both urban and rural funding through a number of grants. In addition to the sidewalk improvement grant, it submitted applications to...

Tonight (Thurs., Jan. 10) the Eagles (1-3 BSC, 3-11 overall) tip off at 6:05 p.m. against Northern Arizona (2-2, 5-9) and Saturday face Sacramento State...

  • Blackhawks hang on for 55-52 league win over scrappy Deer Park

Clutch shooting and aggressive defense and rebounding led the Cheney High boys’ basketball team to a tight, 55-52 come from behind win over visiting Deer Park in the Blackhawks Great Northern League opener last Thursday. Forty-eight hours later however, Cheney gave up too many easy buckets inside in a 64-50 loss to preseason league title favorite Pullman on the road. Thursday the Blackhawks matched the Stags (0-2, 4-6) scrappiness with scrappiness. Cheney fell behind by 2...

  • Youngsters help Cards stay in NEA title hunt

    Paul Delaney, Staff Reporter|Updated Jan 10, 2013

Medical Lake’s youngsters on the roster were certainly expected to get a baptism of fire this season. They were likely not expecting, however, to have to hold down the fort as they did last Saturday in the Cardinals’ 40-36 win over Lakeside. The victory, when coupled with a 62-36 triumph at Newport last Tuesday, left Medical Lake (5-0 NEA, 8-4 overall) a game up on Chewelah (4-0, 8-3) who was in town for a game this past Tuesday. It was the Cardinals’ only game of the week...

Her folks owned the store at that time. In May of 1980, Tom and Kelly planned an outdoor wedding. Mt. St. Helens had a different idea. The Turleys were married instead in the Tyler Grange Hall. • Perfect punch line: the mother-in-law of all jokes

    Lenore Skenazy, Columnist|Updated Jan 10, 2013

If you ever need a punch line, here’s one you always can depend on: “...my mother-in-law!” Guaranteed laugh. Or, from me, a punch in the nose. Fact is I love my mother-in-law and am depressed that she is ailing. But mothers-in-law are just about the only group of people you still can pick on (besides maybe Nazis) without having anyone make a peep. There’s nothing politically incorrect about ragging on the mom of your spouse — or all moms of all spouses. Where’s the mother-in-law lobby when you need ‘em? This group seems t...

  • Reducing the gun violence

    Updated Jan 10, 2013

The violence in schools needs to be reduced (nothing involving human interaction can be completely stopped). But the decision on what to do and how to do it rests with you. It’s symptomatic of a dysfunctional government and/or culture to see more violence in schools, not less. Who is personally responsible for these horrific crimes? The parents of the children and the employees of the school district. The killer comes in third. He is being allowed to kill children by extremely fearful parents and school district employees. S...

  • Giving credit to Senator Murray

    Updated Jan 10, 2013

Having been quick to criticize, I will give credit where it is due. After a nearly two-year struggle with the Veteran’s Administration, I reached out to Senator Murray’s office for help with my disability claim. One of her staff members, a veteran himself pursued my interests like the Marine he is. After contacting her office I received my initial check and back benefits in about two weeks, just in time for the holidays. Financial motivations aside having the designation and recognition as a disabled veteran was well ear...

  • Averting the looming fiscal cliff

    Rep CATHY McMORRIS Rodgers|Updated Jan 10, 2013

In the last few weeks, Congress has been focused on keeping taxes from increasing and putting the U.S. government on a sustainable path toward growth and prosperity. Over long days and late nights, including New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day, we worked on plans to avert the “fiscal cliff” – automatic tax increases (more than $3,000 for the average family in Eastern Washington) and spending cuts – that economists predicted would push the country back into recession and higher unemployment. The good news is that we didn’t go o...

  • Legislature should stop gutting higher education

    Updated Jan 10, 2013

In a Dec. 31 Associated Press article, Eastern Washington University President Dr. Rodolfo Arévalo said he hoped higher education didn’t turn into the state Legislature’s “rainy-day fund” for solving budget problems. Amen. Unfortunately Arévalo also said he is “pessimistic” about the Legislative session beginning Jan. 14 and its abilities to solve these problems. We share that pessimism. This state has big budget challenges in the coming 2013-15 biennium. The Office of Financial Management predicted a $1 billion defic...

  • First year back on the job

    John McCallum, Editor|Updated Jan 10, 2013

John Hensley said he made a critical mistake when he retired from 28 years service in California law enforcement in 2006, one he won’t repeat next time he decides to hang up his badge. “Next time I retire, I’m going to have a plan,” Hensley said. After five years away from working with the boys in blue Hensley found he was missing the day to day aspects of the career. So in 2011, he applied for the Cheney Police Chief position left vacant when former chief Jeff Sale departed for Bend, Ore., and on Dec. 14, was sworn as the...
