Eastern volleyball honored for academic excellence

For the sixth consecutive year, the Eastern Washington University volleyball team has received the Team Academic Award from the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA). As a team, the Eagles boasted a grade point average of 3.53 to garner the annual award. This year’s distinction marks the 15th time in program history that EWU has earned the award.

The Team Academic Award, which was initiated in 1992-93, honors collegiate and high school volleyball teams that have displayed excellence in the classroom during the school year by maintaining at least a 3.30 cumulative team GPA on a 4.0 scale.

This award has become a tradition for the Eastern Washington volleyball program, as the Eagles earned seven consecutive AVCA Team Academic Awards from 1999-2005 and have been featured in each of the past six Team Award announcements. EWU is just one of five Big Sky Conference schools to be recognized and among 164 institutions across Division I this year.

At the conclusion of the 2017 season, the Eagles had nine representatives on the Big Sky Fall All-Academic team, helping Eastern to its third Big Sky Conference Presidents’ Cup in four years.

The Eagles begin the 2018 campaign on Aug. 24 at the Titan Classic in Fullerton, Calif.
