AWH Council discusses Lodging Tax Advisory Committee items

At the July 23 Airway Heights City Council study session meeting, Parks and Recreation Director JC Kennedy requested consideration to appoint Liz Beck to the Lodging Tax Advisory Committee.

Paula Clouse, the representative that served on the committee for Stratford Suites, stepped down as the general manager. Beck had then filled out an application for the council to consider.

On July 2, Beck attended the committee’s meeting, but there was no quorum so it was not official, but Councilman Dave Malet and Kennedy showed her a brief summary of the history for Beck.

Beck brings in about 34 1/2 years of experience in hotel management and was previously on the Spokane Valley Lodging Tax Committee from 2003-2007. She also was on the Tourism Promotion Commission from 2003-2017 and was on chair form 2006-2009. Another experience was on the Spokane Hotel Motel Association from 2003-2017.

In other items, the council heard from Kennedy about the Lodging Tax Advisory Committee requesting to provide $11,000 for marketing and supporting the 2018 Airway Heights Days. On March 23, the committee met and voted to pay for event support and advertisements to market the event.

Airway Heights Days will take place on Aug. 17-18 this year and features a car show along with games, vendors, live music and fireworks. There have been approximately 1,000 people attending the event.

The other item discussed was a review of construction management and inspection proposal for the sunset park water tank exterior recoat.

On June 18, the city council awarded a recoat project to ECI Services, who plans on beginning work in September. This discussion was for construction administration and project inspection services.

The plan for the Sunset Park water tank is to be recoating with paint and to put on the Sunset Elementary School’s mascot on the side of it.
