Albert Tripp was appointed as the new city manager for Airway Heights. Tripp had previously worked as the public works director for the city for three years.

Fairchild Air Force Base Boy Scout Troop 342 announced that nine of its members achieved the rank of Eagle, the highest rank possible in the Boy Scouts of America. The nine included Cyrus Belenky, Adam Robo, Zachary Seals, Jarrod Swanson, Kyle Swanson, Mario Tedesco II, Nathan Walker, Kris Sampson and Zach Wilkinson.

Medical Lake inducted its first class into their sports hall of fame. The class included Sally McCarthy, Gary Glasgow, Neil Sealock, Mike Nilles, Lori Napier, Lenny Parham, Ron Dittemore, John Jensen and Dana Jensen.

June 25, 1998

Acting on a recommendation from the state Department of Transportation, the Cheney City Council voted to reduce the speed limit on both ends of town from 55 miles per hour to 45 mph.

Two local Camp Fire members completed requirements for the Wohelo Medallion Award, the highest achievement for a young person in the program. Board members of the Inland Empire Council of Camp Fire honored Joy Whigham and Klarissa Bleeker with the award.

Mother Nature claimed one of Cheney’s most devoted public servants in the cold waters of the Arkansas River. Al Ogdon, 66, a long-time Cheney resident who spent the past 10 years as the city’s mayor, passed away in a rafting accident in Colorado.

June 23, 1988

After a nationwide search, Dr. B. Dell Felder was named the vice president for academic affairs and provost at Eastern Washington University.

Property owners within Spokane County Fire District 3 were asked to provide an additional $623,000 that was needed to build a new headquarters for district operations.

Family, friends and other assorted well wishers packed into the EWU Pavilion to watch more than 1,700 students graduate from EWU.

Despite the cloudiness of the early Sunday afternoon, several teams signed up for the Founders Day canoe joust. With poles in hand, the jousters tried to knock one another into the cold waters of Medical Lake.

June 22, 1978

Eastern Washington University’s student enrollment was predicted to increase 11 percent in the fall, President H. George Frederickson told the EWU board of trustees.

The Medical Lake Town Council supported an ordinance, that required curbs and sidewalks on all new homes built in Medical Lake.

The Cheney Track Club’s “intermediate class” two-mile relay team of Freddie Johnson, Kirk Walker, Andy McClung and Tom Jessett established a new national record for 14- and 15-year-olds.

50 Years Ago

June 20, 1968

Members of the Cheney School Board were joined by the Amber board to iron out details for the merger of the two districts.

Work was progressing on schedule at the Farmers and Merchants Bank building, with a two-ton bank vault that was in stalled.

In little league baseball results, Cheney A-4 defeated A-5 by a score of 8-7. Paul Edgett and Jim Sooy pitched while Barry Miller was the catcher.
