Ljubisic and Baycroft make it to finals in state golf

Cheney High School golfers had a good showing in the 2A state tournament at the Columbia Point Golf Course in Richland, including a top-10 finish by Thomas Baycroft.

Baycroft tied for 10th overall after shooting a 78 in the first round followed by 72 in the second, good for 150 total strokes. With this finish, he had the best performance in the Great Northern League. Chase McIntosh from Liberty (Issaquah) took first with 139 strokes.

Nate Koohns also competed on the boys side, but did not make the cut for the second round after shooting an 89 in the first round.

On the girls side, Katarina Ljubisic placed 21st with a first round score of 92 followed by an 89 in the second for a 181.

“Katarina was amazing,” head coach Gerald Morton said. “She started the season looking good and each day she just got better. She peaked just at the right time. I could not be more proud of her with a 21st place at state, but I know she wants better and will be doing a ton of work in the off season.”

Ljubisic earned the best finish in the GNL. The closest to her was Julia Lupkes from Pullman in 35th with 193 strokes. Kenedee Peters from Ephrata took first a 148.

“I contribute Katarina’s success to three things,” Morton said. “The first is she simply loves the game and works as hard as anyone to take her game to the next level. Second, she has very supportive parents that have no expectations except that she has fun. Third, and probably the toughest part of the game of golf is her mental toughness.”

Both the girls and boys teams finished third overall in the GNL standings this season.
