Three junior girls from Medical Lake High School were picked from a pool of many candidates to attend Evergreen Girls State and would have sponsorship by the American Legion Auxiliary. The attendees included Natale Szabo and Kimberly Neser. Brianna Bazo was selected as the alternate.

The Eastern Washington State Veterans Cemetery governing council announced that it reached a milestone in its planning efforts for a new veteran’s cemetery, with the selection of a design plan to submit to the National Cemetery Association for approval.

The Airway Heights City Council voted 4-3 to endorse Spokane Transit Authority’s sales tax reauthorization.

The Cheney High School boys soccer team had a 3-0 win over Othello in the opening round of the 2A state tournament.

May 21, 1998

Robert Haugen, graduate of Medical Lake High School, received a bachelor of arts degree in communications and political science from Pacific Lutheran University and was also recognized for his outstanding efforts as a resident advisor in one of the university’s dorms.


Washington state Lt. Gov. Brad Owen visited Windsor Elementary School to congratulate the students on one of the biggest accomplishments of their young lives—getting the Columbian Mammoth declared a state fossil.

The Medical Lake boys tennis team finished league play with a fine flourish. The squad was named co-champions in the Northeast A League with Pullman.

May 19, 1988

Pat Warnick wore a lot of hats as Cheney’s court administrator. She added another hat to her head as president of the state’s District and Municipal Judges’ Association.


A reception was planned to honor four retiring Cheney School District teachers: Altamae Whitehill, Doug Sloan, Hal Harvey and Edna Murphy.

Chuck Lee, a part of the Cheney High School athletic scene for nearly a decade, was moving on to guide the football fortunes in his hometown of Connell.

Tish O’Connor was selected as the 1987 Medical Lake Founders’ Day queen. Denise Lee was named first princess and Rachelle Earl was second.

May 18, 1978

An informal poll of the Big Sky Conference presidents indicated that Eastern Washington University would not be included in further discussions, should the league discuss expansion, President George Frederickson told EWU trustees.


Tom Oswald, a 1967 graduate of Cheney High School, was chosen as the next Blackhawk head football coach, according to School Superintendent Gale Marrs.

While the non-profit Cheney Care Center Association received good news about a favorable loan from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development, the old care center on Second Street would close its doors as of June 15.

50 Years Ago

May 17, 1968

Cheerleaders and twirlers, chosen to lead Cheney High sports activites next year, were selected at the school. They were Cindy Johnson, Linda Nelson, Bobbi Suess, Gail Michaelson, Debbie Salter, Dorothy Frowsie, Peggy Bedient, Nancy Steiner, Gail Horton and Nancy Zaremba.

Brent Wooten was the new Eastern Washington State College head football coach, succeeding Dave Holmes, who was taking over as grid mentor at the University of Hawaii.
