Cheney boys golf finds success at districts

The Cheney High School boys golf team had a good showing at the first round of districts at MeadowWood Golf Course in Liberty Lake on May 7 as three golfers advanced to the second round.

Tyler Koohns took second overall with 72 strokes for the Blackhawks. Eric Martin from Pullman was the only other competitor in front, hitting for 71 strokes.

Thomas Baycroft placed fourth with 76 and Nate Koohns earned fifth with 77.

The three Blackhawks competed on Wednesday, May 9, at the Liberty Lake Golf Course. The top seven advance to the state golf 2A championships in Richland at Columbia Point Golf Course May 21-23.

Jack Kallem (108), Nate Elliot (111) and Donovan Hart (125) also competed, but did not make it into the top-14 to advance.

Previously, the Blackhawks also competed at the fourth Great Northern League tournament of the year. Nate Koohns finished the highest for Cheney, placing fourth with 82 strokes. Baycroft was right behind him with 84 strokes. Kallem (102), Elliot (106) and Hart (126) rounded off the competition for Cheney. As a team, they tallied 500 strokes and took third.

At the end of regular season, Cheney had three top-10 athletes in the GNL. Baycroft was fourth with an average of 82, Tyler Koohns was fifth with 83 and Nate Koohns was sixth with 85. Martin from Pullman was first with 79.
