Dozens of families and children turned out for the annual “Fishing Kids” event at Clear Lake, an activity that was run by volunteers with the state Department of Fish and Wildlife.
The National Endowment of Humanities and American Library Association awarded 21 books to the Medical Lake Middle School library for the Humanities and American Association. The books were on display in the main lobby for the rest of the year.
A 17-year-old Spokane County boy was arrested after he drove through the West Plains firing random shots from his car into the trees. With assistance of Airway Heights Police officers, the suspect was arrested by Sheriff’s deputies around 7:45 p.m.

Over 80 people showed up to hear what the Cheney Planning Commission would decide on the proposed expansion of the Membership Lodging Overlay Zone. But, acting on a suggestion floated by absent commissioner Tom Trulove, the commission voted 3-2 to table discussion on the issue until their regularly scheduled meeting in August.
The Cheney Lions Club held a fundraising raffle with an indoor barbeque as the prize. When the lucky ticket was drawn, it belonged to George and Eva Spilker of Medical Lake.
Dr. Stephen Jordan was named Eastern Washington University president. He and his wife, Ruth, would occupy the University House around July 1.

Cheney’s representation in the Armed Forces/Torchlight Parade would be noticeably different than years past, as there was no community float to wind through the streets of downtown Spokane. The high school band marched, however, and Cheney’s Junior Miss and her court would ride atop an antique city fire truck.
The St. Vincent De Paul Society, over 150 years old, was within a month of opening a shop in downtown Cheney.
Medical Lake’s softball team swept Riverside to claim second place in the Northeast A League, sparked by home runs from Tricia Hodgson, Lynette Bryon, Teresa Szprejda and Lori Napier.

According to the Spokane County Elections Department, the Cheney School District special levy request passed by just a single vote.
Members of the Cheney School Board toured Salnave Elementary School, where work was underway to expand the kindergarten through third-grade facility into a K-6 building.
Rick Rablin won three events to lead the Cheney Blackhawks track and field team to a huge victory over Colville, giving the Hawks an undefeated Frontier League season, the first for Curt Hisaw in his eight years of coaching at Cheney.

Lee Bros. of Hayward, Calif., sold its supermarket in Cheney to Jerry and Paul Riba. The store would be an IGA Foodliner.
Miss Linda Ray was installed as honored queen of Job’s Daughters in a colorful ceremony at the Masonic Temple.
Standard Oil of California built a new, modern Chevron station at the corner of Lake and Lefevre streets in Medical Lake. John Szprejda would manage it.
