CHS boys golf ties for first at home tournament

Playing at home seemed to pay off for the Cheney High School boys golf team as they shot their season best score of 436, tying for first place with Pullman at the third Great Northern League tournament of the year at the Fairways Golf Course.

Nate Koohns and Thomas Baycroft tied for third overall with 77 strokes. Dane Bednar (Pullman) and Trail Thompson (East Valley) tied for first with 76.

Tyler Koohns earned fifth with 78 strokes to round off the top-5 performances for Cheney.

"The three boys played awesome," head coach Jeff Pike said in an email.

Other Cheney participants included Jack Kallem (99), Nate Elliot (105) and Brayden Landt (118).

The Blackhawks sit at third overall in the GNL with a total of 1,392 strokes so far this season. The last regular season tournament took place on May 3, at Pullman at the Palouse Ridge Golf Course.

The first district round takes place on May 7, at the MeadwWood Golf Course. The second round is across the road at Liberty Lake Golf Course May 9.

"All teams will bring six players to Districts," Pike said. "I think Cheney has a good chance to advance the entire team to the second round."
