Cheney High’s boys track and field team stayed unbeaten in Great Northern League dual meet competition with a 77-68 win at West Valley last Wednesday. The Blackhawks won 11 of 17 events to run their record to 3-0 in the GNL.

Charles Johnson and Cole Omlin delivered a 1-2 senior-freshman punch by each winning a pair of events. Johnson took first in the 100 and 200-meter dashes with times of 10.96 seconds in the former and 21.48 in the latter — a new personal record. Omlin captured the high jump with a leap of 6 feet even and won the triple jump at 43-00.

Also on the track, Carson Brown won the 400 in a time of 50.99, while Danny Boyd took the 110 hurdles in 17.65 and Isaiah Dunn set a new PR of 41.81 to capture the 300 hurdles. Kevin Houndonougbo and Bas Holland were second in the 800 and 1,600 while Zach Jongeward and Peyton Putney each finished third in the 100 and 200.

In the relays, the 4x100 team of Jongeward, McGourin, Putney and Johnson was first in 43.01, and the 4x400 team of Houndonougbo, Brown, Dunn and Johnson was first in 3:27.60.

In the field events, Jacob McGourin and Hyrum McCombie went 1-2 in the discus, with McGourin first at 170-06 and McCombie second with a PR of 117-10. McGourin was also third in the shot put.

Freshman Ryan Riekmann won the javelin with a PR toss of 155 feet. Will Rushing was second in the pole vault, with Cameron Villalobos third. Dawson West was third in the high jump and Parker Rogers was third in the triple jump.

Saturday, the Blackhawks stayed home for their own Van Kuren Invitational. Cheney easily kept the team trophy at home, winning with 146 points, with Lynden High School far back in second with 86 and Greater Spokane League 4A Gonzaga Prep in third at 61.

Johnson and Putney served up a double 1-2 punch in the 100 and 200, with Johnson taking first in both — including a new season record of 10.67 in the 100 — and Putney placing second, turning in a new PR of 11.10 in the 100 and a new season mark of 22.63 in the 200.

Brown won the 400 in 51.04, with Dunn taking first in the 300 hurdles in 41.90. Boyd was fourth in the 110 hurdles, Holland was fifth in the 3,200 and Tucker Cunningham finished eighth in the 1,600.

Cheney swept the relays, including the seldom run 4x200 and the distance medley relay — 1,200, 400, 800 and 1,600 meter legs.

McGourin, Putney, Johnson and Omlin won the 4x100 and the 4x200, while Houndonougbo, Brown, Dunn and Johnson took the 4x400. Cunningham, Dusten Butikofer, Julian Torres and Holland finished first in the DMR in 11:35.76.

Keeping busy, McGourin took first in the discus with a throw of 158-06, winning by over 21 feet, while also finishing seventh in the shot put. Omlin was first in the high jump and second in the triple jump with a new PR of 43-04 3/4, with Riekmann fifth in the javelin and West seventh in the high jump.

Cheney wrapped up its GNL dual-meet schedule Wednesday, April 18, by hosting Pullman.
