WOMEN’S BASKETBALL

Delaney Hodgins’ record effort earns her another player-of-week honor

After a historic two games, Eastern Washington University women’s basketball player Delaney Hodgins was selected as the Big Sky Conference Player of the Week, as announced by the conference office March 3.

In two games, Hodgins scored 83 points.

During the regular season finale and a 98-83 win over Northern Arizona, the senior set the Big Sky and EWU single-game scoring record with 46 points. The previous Big Sky record was 41 points, held by a number of others.

The NAU performance was followed by a big night at Southern Utah on Feb. 28 where Hodgins’ then career-high of 37 points led the Eagles to a 70-49 victory, which was just one point shy of tying the program record.

This is the third time this season she has received the award and the fourth time in her career. Only Brianne Ryan (five times, 2011-12) has received more Player of the Week awards in EWU history in one season.

MEN’S BASKETBALL

Bliznyuk collects fifth Big Sky player of week award

An NCAA Division I record and move up to third on the Big Sky Conference all-time men’s basketball scoring chart were the accomplishments last week for Eastern Washington University’s Bogdan Bliznyuk as he was selected as the Ready Nutrition Player of the Week by the league office March 5.

He had double-doubles in both games last week in EWU’s 74-51 victory over Southern Utah and an 85-68 win over Northern Arizona. He averaged 23.5 points, 8.0 rebounds and 7.5 assists, while making all nine of his free throws, 17-of-30 shots overall (56.7 percent) and 4-of-12 (33.3 percent) from the 3-point arc.

Bliznyuk set a new NCAA Division I single season record for consecutive free throws made against Northern Arizona on March 3. He made all six of his free throws, including a pressure-packed, record-breaking pair with 3:46 left in the Senior Day game. He has now made 74 consecutive free throws dating back to EWU’s game at North Dakota on Dec. 31, breaking the previous record of 73 set by Gary Buchanan from Villanova over a 21-game stretch in the 2000-01 season.

Bliznyuk was honored five times by the league this season.
