Sandra Reiber is given service award at Airway Heights meeting

At the Feb. 20 Airway Heights City Council meeting, Sandra Reiber was given the service award as she has served on the Housing and Community Development Citizen Advisory Committee.

“You have provided many years of great service to Airway Heights,” City Manager Albert Tripp said to Reiber.

The council also officially approved of sponsorship at the Kalispel Tribe’s Salish Conference for a donation of $5,000. The conference is designed to celebrate culture and the language of the Kalispel.

“This is a good opportunity for us,” Mayor Kevin Richey said.

After discussing it at the study session meeting a week prior, the council also approved of a half-acre purchase for the Public Works Department.

At the Feb. 26 Airway Heights City Council study session meeting, councilman Sonny Weathers informed the board that he met with Cheney School District’s Superintendent Rob Roettger. The discussion led to more talk about how the council would like to see other changes in the school district in the future.

Amy Gravelle also gave a financial report on the 2017 budget. This led to discussion about Airway Heights being able to plow their own roads. Public Works Director Kevin Anderson said how they are working on a salt grind machine in the future for the city.

“It is expensive, but mixing your own salt is more cost effective,” Anderson said. “It is also a different level of service to the city.”

In the next item, Anderson talked to the council again about the transportation circulation plan for the city. Anderson hopes to make final changes in the next week and potentially have it sent to the city council for approval on March 5.

Development Services Director Derrick Braaten also updated the council on code enforcement in the area.

“It is a give and take process,” Braaten said.

He hopes to hire an official code enforcer in late April or early May as Braaten is the one handling all the reports right now.

In staff reports, Police Chief Lee Bennett said that he is running into a “brick building” on finding a new animal control service as the contract with Spokanimal ended on Feb. 28.

“We are running out of options,” Bennett said.
