In efforts to improve the relations between the community and law enforcement, the Cheney Police Department begun its community-policing program. Cheney Lt. Dave Mather developed the program.

The Cheney Frog Hollow 4H team of intermediates, known as the "Fear the Frogs," took first place at the Spokane County 4H Horse Bowl competition at Spokane Falls Community College. The Cheney team has won the award for six consecutive years. The team included Noelle Manusia, Kendra Swenson, Rayne Roberts, Ben Parrish and coaches Becky Parish and Kayleen Oliver.

Medical Lake's municipal court received a t $5,000 grant from the Washington State Office of Public Defense (WSOPD) to help fund services for indigent defendants.

Feb. 19, 1998

Rumors of a major commercial development on Cheney's north side - anchored by a major grocery store - picked up steam. The city received a "site plan" of a proposal that called for 150,000 square feet of construction. The proposed project would transform vacant land on the west side of Highway 904, south of Betz road.

A new restaurant in Cheney opened at J and First Streets called Players. The small eatery mixed a lunch0oriented menu with a sporty theme to create a relaxing yet interesting atmosphere for customers.

Medical Lake sent eight wrestlers to the Mat Classic X, the state competition at the Tacoma Dome.

Feb. 18, 1988

Jennifer Nagata, a sixth-grader at Blair Elementary School, took first place among the elementary students at an essay contest at Eastern Washington University. The writing was about Martin Luther King Jr.

After receiving several nomination letters, the Kiwanis of Medical Lake sat down to determine who should be the Senior of the Year for 1987, but the task was a little easier than first anticipated. The decision was basically unanimous, with seven nominations letters all asking that Dora Burt be given the honors.

Doug Yarroll took over as Cheney postmaster, coming from St. Maries, Idaho. He brought 17 years worth of experience to the job.

50 Years Ago

Feb. 15, 1968

Eastern Washington State College revised its journalism program. It made it so students who were majoring in the subject would also have to study another academic area as well.

Merritt Johnson was named the new chairman of the Board of Trustees of the Cheney Public Library. Other officers elected at the meeting were Stan Pierce, vice-chairman and Eugene Fletcher, re-elected secretary.

The Firemen's Ball was held at the Cheney City Hall with Amber orchestra furnishing the music. The dance was set to help raise funds for Volunteer Fireman's insurance, new equipment, the injured volunteers benefit fund and other necessities.
