From the archives: 1988 Bonnie Van Tine had plenty to keep her occupied, as she dropped in on one of the sessions for preschoolers at the Cheney library. Aside from watching son Ryan, 5, complete his Valentine project, she was keeping tabs on daughter Kara, 10 months. A fussy Jessie Gibb crawled over and let it be known that he wasn't at all happy.

In efforts to improve the relations between the community and law enforcement, the Cheney Police Department begun its community-policing program. Cheney Lt. Dave Mather developed the program.

The Cheney Frog Hollow 4H team of intermediates, known as the "Fear the Frogs," took first place at the Spokane County 4H Horse Bowl competition at Spokane Falls Community College. The Cheney team has won the award for six consecutive years. The team included Noelle Manusia, Kendra Swenson, Rayne Roberts, Ben Parrish and coaches Becky Parish and Kayleen Oliver.
