Ten CHS wrestlers move onto regionals on Feb. 10

After a successful showing for Cheney High School’s wrestling team at the Great Northern League District meet, 10 Blackhawks are advancing to regionals, which takes place at East Valley High School on Feb. 10. As a team, Cheney finished third in the GNL competition with 208 points. EVHS took first with 268.5.

Seniors Zack Nguyen and Boedy Taylor along with freshman Dylan Straley highlighted the meet, with all three taking first in their respective brackets.

Straley (126) received two byes in the first rounds, but went on to pin Jayden Musgrove from Clarkston in 46 seconds in the third round. In the championship round, Straley won with another pin over Jordan Welch from Clarkston in 2:35.

Nguyen (138) received a bye in the first round and went on to pin Zachary Walton from Clarkston in 30 seconds. In the semifinal round, he won a 20-6 major decision over Skylar Richardson from EVHS. Nguyen closed out the day with a 9-4 decision over Zachary Bowsky from East Valley in the championship match.

Taylor (182) received a bye in the first two rounds before pinning Hayden Muraszewski from Pullman in less than three minutes in the semifinals. In the first place match, Taylor won by a pin over Scott Bray in 5:29.

The next batch of wrestlers to qualify all took home third, including five freshman, Jase Winner (106), Hunter Despino (126), Jackson Showalter (132), Blake Seubert (145), Anthony Aguilera (152) and senior Alan Coumbs (170) along with sophomore Mason Allen (195).

Winner defeated Chase Wiedmer from EVHS and Cheney’s William Seeburger in the consolation bracket.

Despino defeated James Crist from Pullman in the consolation semifinals match and went on to a win 8-2 over Jayden Musgrove from Clarkston in the third-place match.

Showalter pinned Cyrus Morrow from West Valley in the quarterfinal round after receiving a bye, but lost in the semifinals. In the consolation bracket, he went on to pin Cheney’s Michael Bozeman and defeat Zach Dahmen in an ultimate tiebreaker to take third.

Seubert received a bye in the first round and went 2-2 on the day with a win over Carson Coulter from PHS and Bodie Bedow from EVHS to eventually earn a qualifying spot.

Aguilera went 3-1 on the day and had two wins over Chase Berezey from East Valley and Danny Grote from Cheney. Two of Aguilera’s wins were by pins.

Coumbs pinned Matthew Mason from East Valley and went on to defeat Kameron Kinkade from Pullman and pin Aeden Galles from Clarkston in the consolation bracket.

Allen started off the day by pinning Adrian DeGuzman from Pullman. In the consolation bracket, Allen continued his success by pinning Jason Inman from Cheney and Daniel Nicklaus from Clarkston to earn third.

William Seeburger (106) and Jackson Knutzen (220) took fourth place, but did not qualify for regionals.
