From the archives: 1988 Justin Countryman, 3, told us that it might just be spring, as he delivered the first buttercup of the season to the newspaper office. Justin and his family lived on acreage near Marshall. The newspaper annually provides a prize for the first boy and girl who bring a buttercup through the front door of the office. Justin was the first boy.

The Medical Lake police department was awarded two traffic safety grants from the Washington Association of Sheriffs and Police Chiefs (WASPC). That brought nearly $1,500 in funds for the purchase of new equipment and materials for a traffic safety education project to be taught at Medical Lake's elementary schools.

Spokane County Sheriff's detectives raided a house in Cheney seizing 32 pot plants and nine and a half pounds of harvested marijuana. The house was across the street from the Cheney High School's football field.
