Six gymnasts move on to regionals for Cheney

The Cheney High School gymnastics team had six of their eight varsity athletes qualify for regionals after their performances at districts on Jan. 26 in the Tri-Cities.

“Cheney gymnastics had a great meet,” head coach Jamie Frucci said. “Alexis Miller really shined and showed great mental toughness throughout the meet. I am proud of all of the girls and excited for regionals.”

Overall, the Blackhawks placed fourth out of seven teams with 159.350 points. Kamiakin High School took first with 173.575.

Senior Alexis Miller highlighted the meet, having four top-10 performances. In the all-around scoring, she took seventh with 34.675 points. She earned eighth in the bars (8.400), fifth in the beam (8.825) and sixth on the floor (9.250).

With her success, Miller is now qualified to compete in the all-around scoring at regionals. She will compete in all events and her four scores will be added to give her an all-around mark.

Sophomore Sophia VanWormer is moving on to regionals to compete in the vault, bars, beam and floor as an individual on each event. In districts, she placed eighth in the all-around scoring with 34.400 points. VanWormer received that score after taking fourth in bars (8.800), ninth in beam (8.450) and ninth on the floor (9.125).

Another qualifier for the Blackhawks was junior Laia Vidal who will compete in the vault, bars, beam and floor as an individual in each event at regionals.

Sophomore Kyli Mayhew and junior Makayla Miller will also compete at the next round in the bars and beam. Freshman Lauren O’Callahan rounds out the athletes for Cheney, advancing in the vault.

From regionals, the athletes can qualify for state which will be held at the Tacoma Dome on Feb. 15-16.
