From the archives: 2008 This fire hydrant in Cheney showed the results of a record 8 inches of snow that fell on Jan. 9. It was just part of a winter that brought the area nearly 93 inches of snow for the season, the second most ever, surpassed only by close to 98 inches that fell during the winter of 2008-09.

Cheney and the surrounding West Plains received around eight inches of snow, the most in a single day in the last four years.
At a Cheney City Council meeting, it was announced that the expansion of the wastewater treatment plant was going to cost $12.4 million.
Long-time area sports figure, former Medical Lake coach, athletic director and teacher Hank Coplen passed away. Coplen, 80, had been fighting cancer.

The Cheney Police Department's end of the year report showed a 44.8 percent increase in service calls for the department as compared to 1996 totals. The dispatchers handled 6,651 calls in 1997.
Popular screen actor Danny Glover appeared live in "An Evening with Langston and Martin" at Eastern Washington University.
The Burlington Northern/Santa Fe Railroad was planning to construct a parallel track from near downtown Cheney to about 1.5 miles west of Lance Hill Road. The second track would sit about 25 feet from the existing track, just far enough away to allow two trains to pass.

Results of a test pump of the Medical Lake well project near Espanola showed the well producing much more modest gallons per minute than pervious estimations. Though disappointing results, city officials said this relieved pressure on the city and gives more time to discuss and plan new solutions to fix the city's water issues.
Members of the Cheney School Board were shocked at the City Council's 6-1 vote against annexing Cheney Middle School into the city limits. Mayor Tom Trulove stated even if the council votes in favor of annexation, it is impossible to raise funding for the needed property reconstruction costs.
Cheney girls' basketball team posted two more Frontier League victories, bringing the Hawks league record to 9-0.
