Cheney VFW names essay winners

Cheney's Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 11326 has announced the winners of the 2017 Voice of Democracy and Patriots Pen youth scholarship competition.

Cheney High School student Alan Coumbs won first place in the Voice of Democracy category, with fellow CHS student Collin Hines placing second. Betz Elementary School student Lauren Nielson was first in the Patriot's Pen competition, with Salnave Elementary School student Aspen Smith second and Betz student Avery Hutton third.

According to a news release, the Voice of Democracy competition was for high school students in the ninth – 12th grades who enter an audio essay on this year's theme "American History: Our hope for the future. The competition was established in 1947, and each year over 40,000 high school students enter to win a share of $2.1 million in scholarships and incentives awarded through the program.

Patriot's Pen is for sixth through eighth-grade students who enter a 300-400 word essay on this year's theme: "America's Gift to my Generation.

First-place winners in each competition advance to compete at the district, department and national level.
