Blackhawks open basketball season with split

Cheney High’s boys basketball team is off to a 50-50 start in its 2017-2018 season. The Blackhawks opened with a 63-52 home win over Deer Park on Nov. 28, followed by a 59-50 loss last Saturday, Dec. 2, at Rogers.

Third-year head coach Gregg Smith said his team was in control for most of the game with the Northeast A League Stags. Cheney shot 55 percent from inside the 3-point arc against Deer Park’s 2–3 zone defense, with Jake Berman leading in scoring with 19 points. Sophomore Kaiden Custer chipped in 10 while freshman Cole Omlin added nine.
