Kurt Calhoun (left) and Gage Gubrud were arrested in the early morning hours of Nov. 5.

Details released by the Cheney Police Department indicate that two Eastern Washington University football players were arrested early Sunday, Nov. 5 for obstructing officers.

EWU's quarterback Gage Gubrud, and linebacker Kurt Calhoun, both starters on the team, were cited but not jailed after being accused of attempting to interfere with a friend's arrest.

According to a statement released Nov. 5 from the athletic department, head football coach Aaron Best said Gubrud and Calhoun will practice this week but will not be with the team when they play this Saturday, Nov. 11, at the University of North Dakota in Grand Forks.

The two players, who earlier had participated in Eastern's 28-20 Big Sky Conference loss to Weber State on Homecoming at Roos Field, tried to stop the arrest of a friend who was observed damaging property at the Mason Jar restaurant in downtown Cheney.

Both were repeatedly instructed by officers to leave the scene but refused police reports say. Gubrud, from McMinnville, Ore., and Calhoun, from Zillah, Wash., were arrested on a misdemeanor charge of obstructing a public servant. They were cited and released.

Team officials did not elaborate on the details of the incident.

"I was made aware this morning of a situation that occurred last night involving both Gage and Kurt," Best said in the news release. "The incident is in violation of our team rules, and in response to the situation, I have suspended both players for this week's game at North Dakota. Unless something else unveils itself, we will then move forward."

In a game where a win may keep alive Eastern's faint postseason chances, Gubrud will be replaced in the lineup by redshirt freshman Eric Barriere. This will be his first start in an Eastern uniform.

Barriere has appeared in three games this season and is 1 of 2 for 13 yards and an interception, all in a relief role against Texas Tech on Sept. 2.

Gubrud has thrown for 2,897 yards and 22 touchdowns this season for the Eagles who fell to 4-2 in Big Sky play and 5-4 overall following Saturday's loss.

Calhoun, who had a career-high 13 tackles against Weber State, is likely to be replaced for the game by redshirt sophomore Andrew Katzenberger, who has played in 16 career games as a backup.

Both players are currently eligible to return for Eastern's final regular season game, Nov. 18 at home against Portland State.
