County library presents documentary about race and United States prison boom

The Spokane County Library District is hosting viewings and discussions of the award-winning documentary “13TH” from director Ava DuVernay and Netflix.

According to a district news release, the United States leads the world in incarceration. In this thought-provoking documentary, scholars, activists and politicians analyze the criminalization of African Americans and the U.S. prison boom.

The film earned an Oscar nomination and won Best Documentary at both the BAFTA and NAACP Image Awards. “13TH” is rated TV MA. Spokane Civil rights attorney Breean Beggs and Whitworth Vice President of Student Life and Dean of Students Rhosetta Rhodes will lead a conversation after the viewings at the Moran Prairie, Cheney and Argonne Libraries.

The film will be shown, with discussion after, at the Cheney Library on Saturday, Nov. 18, from 1-3:30 p.m. The official trailer of the documentary “13TH” is available on YouTube at youtu.be/V66F3WU2CKk.
