Parks and recreation offers events for everyone

The West Plains parks and recreation offices have been busy putting together seasonal events until the end of the year for our communities.

In Airway Heights, it starts with a new event, “Cooking with Cops,” taking place at Sunset Elementary School at 5:30 p.n. on Oct. 13. The event will be a way the community shows awareness of domestic violence along with a fundraiser for the C.A.R.E.S. scholarship fund at the parks and recreation department. Tickets are $10 for an adult, $5 for a child or $25 for a family of four.

The next event for students is an open gym held at Sunset Elementary School on Oct. 20 along with another one on Nov. 21. The deadline for registration for a trip to Laser Quest on Nov. 9 is also on Oct. 20.

A week later, the department will host a movie night that includes pizza at the community center with the showing of “Pitch Perfect 2” on Oct. 27, to get ready for “Pitch Perfect 3” that comes out on Dec. 22.

The following day on Oct. 28, is the city’s fall community clean up. Parks and recreation staff will be accepting yard and garden debris at the Park Maintenance Building located at 924 S. Lawson St. from 9 a.m. – 2 p.m.

The city will accept branches and limbs less than 2 inches in diameter, leaves, pinecones/needles, grass clips, thatch and garden vegetation. They will not accept dirt, sod, rocks, untrimmed tree branches and general household garbage. Proof of residency will be required.

The next festive event is on Halloween, Oct. 31, for the annual Trunk or Treat at Sunset Elementary School. Kids will be able to go trick or treating from 6 – 8 p.m. The vehicle check-in time will be from 5 – 5:45 p.m. Awards will be handed out for best community entry and best business/corporate entry.

On Nov. 18, the department will host a community turkey bowl in honor of Thanksgiving. Residents need to register by Nov. 13 as a team or as a free agent. The event will be from noon – 2 p.m. and it is free to join. The family friendly 6-on-6 community flag football game will take place at Sunset Park. Game balls and flags are provided.

In Cheney, the fun begins on Oct. 27 with a middle school dance from 6:30 – 8 p.m. with a $5 admission price at Cheney Middle School. The dancing continues the next day, Oct. 28, as there will be an all community costume and glow in the dark dance party at the Wren Pierson Building from 7 – 11 p.m. There will be a $10 entry fee as it is a fundraiser for Specialized Recreation and Special Olympic participants.

On Nov. 4, there will be a Cheney Pumpkin Launch on Betz Road for people to throw their moldy pumpkins at the 50 Acre Park. The cost is $20 for a six-person team and registration is due Oct. 27.

Parents can also sign up for their kids to receive a letter from Santa. Registration is due on Nov. 17 and letters will be mailed out the week of Dec. 11. It costs $5 per letter.

A day later on Nov. 18, there will be a 21 and over Murder Mystery Dinner held by parks and recreation at the Barrelhouse at 5 p.m. It is $50 to attend the event which includes dinner and two drink tickets. Registration is due Nov. 10, which is when attendees will receive their character description.

The annual tree lighting in Cheney will take place on Dec. 7 at the library. New this year is a dinner with Santa after the ceremony. The deadline to register is Nov. 27 and cost $10 per adult and $5 per child, with kids two and under free.

On Dec. 21, there will be a holiday light tour as well, taking place in Spokane from 6:30 – 8:30 p.m. It costs $14 with cocoa, apple cider and treats available on the tour.
