Airway Heights informed its citizens what their plans for water reuse were and what the next steps would be.

An unexpected sudden interest in a long-planned rezone proposal for an undeveloped parcel near Fox Hollow in Medical Lake forced Planning Commission members to postpone a public hearing, when nearly 200 citizens turnout overflowed City Hall's upstairs council chambers.

The Cheney Blackhawks opened up their season with a 26-7 win over Wapato.

Sept. 11, 1997

The old Elegant Egg restaurant next to Power Chevrolet on First Street in Cheney had an interested tenant, the Greenacres Baptist Church. But the proposal to convert the vacant building into a Baptist Church was rejected by the Cheney Planning Commission.

Work crews were busy getting Pearce Hall on the EWU campus ready for the start of another school year. A Spokane firm was on the scene, moving up and down the exterior of the 130-foot building, helping finish painting the building.

The Medical Lake Cardinals were ready to jump right into the new season with a tough early season matchup against West Valley at Holliday Field.

Sept. 10, 1987

Everything went wrong for a would-be bank robber in Cheney. The police were already responding to a nearby call when business owner Linda Walker of Cheney Farmers and Merchants Bank called on a hunch, ending in a failed robbery.

Medical Lake School Board upheld its belief in the 5-year-old minimum before Aug. 31 policy on children entering kindergarten, following a Fairchild couple's recent appeal of the rule to allow their child into school.

Cheney's Drug Abuse Resistance Education (DARE) program was not in good shape as it had not received much response from the general public in donations, though city and service groups had come through with contributions.

Sept. 8, 1977

Eastern Washington State College was officially set to become Eastern Washington University by action of the Washington State Legislature. It was the third name change in the institution's 87 years.

The long and unused Eastern State Hospital Pine Lodge building would soon become a mini-prison for drug offenders. The remodeled facility was set to open early 1978.

Two important bond requests were to be decided by voters of Cheney. The first would finance the replacement for parks and recreation equipment while the second would fund a recycling center in the Wren Pierson Building.

Sept. 7, 1967

Almost the entire color spectrum could be viewed in the faces of the flowers in Jack Crabb's garden that had him win awards across the state.

The Department of Motor Vehicles had re-designed the licenses distributed to Washington juvenile drivers because of two new laws passed by the 1967 legislature.

Minne Harwood of Medical Lake passed away just 19 days short of being 105 years of age.
