Cheney Congregational Church

Cheney Congregational Church will use Sept. 21, the International Day of Peace, to launch a series of events centered on the theme of peace. Dr. Lisa Brown will kick off the first special event.

The Thursday, Sept. 21, event will be held at the Congregational Church, 423 N. Sixth St., over the noon hour. A free lunch will be provided to attendees and will be served at promptly 12:05 p.m. Brown will speak and participants will be able to attend the event and return to work by 1 p.m.

There will be ample parking in the lot to the north of our church, which is the green church across the street from the high school parking lot. The community is invited to attend this event, which addresses one of the most universally longed for needs of our world.

Future events will occur on the second Sunday of October, November and December at 12:15 p.m. Lunches will be provided to all attendees for each of the events. Further information about the content of each event will be forthcoming.

The theme for all events will be “Peace in Cheney.” Discussions about peace often lead to listing beautiful platitudes. Each of our speakers will raise up for discussion concrete and substantive paths to peace that we can pursue for making the Cheney community a true place of peace.

Brown taught economics for 20 years at Eastern Washington University. She has served in Spokane state senate and most recently as chancellor of Washington State University campus. She has recently announced her candidacy for congress, but this event will concern itself with our community of Cheney.

For your contemplation: “There’s an art to living your questions. You peel them. You listen to them. You let them spawn new questions. You hold the unknowing inside. You linger with it instead of rushing into half-baked answers. Jesuit priest and writer Anthony de Mell puts it well: ‘Some people will never learn anything because they grasp too soon. Wisdom, after all, is not a station you arrive at, but a manner of traveling … To know exactly where you’re headed may be the best way to go astray. Not all who loiter are lost,” –Sue Monk Kidd.
