EWU keeper is Player of the Week

Eastern Washington University soccer player Kelsee Winston’s collegiate career is off to a solid start, as she was named the Big Sky Conference Defensive Player of the Week on Aug. 22 following the opening weekend of play. Winston’s second-half efforts in both of Eastern’s matches over the weekend helped the Eagles get off to a 2-0-0 start.

“We planned on throwing Kelsee into the fire and putting her into tough spots in the second half of both games to see how she would respond,” head coach Chad Bodnar said.

“She is the kind of player that doesn’t let things get to her and that’s why she is a good goalkeeper. An accolade like this is always neat especially after your first weekend of college soccer. She did a great job for us, she didn’t make any mistakes and came up with a couple of good saves.”

In the season opener against Omaha on Aug. 18, Winston played all 45 minutes of the second half. She faced three shots and made two key saves to garner a save percentage of 1.000 on the day as Eastern went on to win 5-1.

In Sunday’s shutout win over South Dakota, Winston picked up her first win in net as she kept another clean sheet in 45 minutes of play. The freshman only faced one shot and did not concede a goal.

EWU is preparing to hit the road for four straight road matches, beginning with the Montana Cup this coming weekend. The Eagles take on San Jose State on Friday (Aug. 25) at 1:30 p.m. before facing Air Force on Sunday (Aug. 27) at 9 a.m.
