Airway Heights Kiwanis connects the community

The Airway Heights Kiwanis club has been around for about six years, but has made an impact in the community from the start.

“In regards to my personal experience with Kiwanis, I actually started as a member of Key Club in High School, and have fond memories of trick or treating for United Nations International Children’s Emergency Fund (UNICEF),” Stacy Kvamme, the club’s president said in an email. “My membership in the Airway Heights Kiwanis Club has been a fun and engaging way to not only connect with members of the local business and education community, but also make new friends.”

Kiwanis meets the first and third Tuesday of every month at noon in the Airway Heights meeting room. Anybody is welcome to join the club by contacting Kvamme at 509-893-8250 or for more information about the upcoming events through Kiwanis.

“What’s great about Kiwanis is there a way for members of all ages and walks of life to connect with their community, while also giving back to help make their community a little bit better,” Kvamme added. “In other words, it’s a win-win for everyone involved.”

The statement for the club is “The Airway Heights Kiwanis Club is dedicated to serving the youth of Airway Heights and the West Plains through service projects and fundraising.”

“I have been a part of the club for about four years,” Jacob Powers, the former president said. “We team up with departments around town to help put on events for the community. A lot of times we work with parks and recreation and volunteer our time or help my sponsoring.”

Some of the events that Kiwanis are a part of are: a pancake breakfast, the father daughter dance, talent shows, paint a helmet, hygiene kits for middle schoolers, giving out books at “Trunk or Treat”, photographs with Santa, school supplies for Sunset Elementary, Airway Heights Clean-up and they also sponsor the community garden.

“The main focus is really on the kids,” Powers added.

A typical meeting is with the members discussing the community along the events coming up and how they can participate. The club also has guest speakers to come speak to them.

Their club could not help out as much as they do if it was not for their fundraising. One of the biggest fundraisers is coming up soon at Airway Heights Days as they run the beer garden to raise money.

“It’s not often I can say I look forward to fundraising, but I can honestly say I look forward to the Airway Heights Kiwanis Club fundraising events because I truly believe in the causes we support in our local community, and I have a great time hanging out with my fellow Kiwanians,” Kvamme said.
