There are a variety of painted rocks being hidden around the Cheney area due to a new Facebook page called Cheney Rocks! The page currently has over 200 members.

If people start to see painted rocks around Cheney - they are not going crazy. In fact, painting rocks is encouraged these days after Angie Warr Lopez started a group called "Cheney Rocks!"

"I set up the Facebook page a couple weeks ago and I have had a great response from it so far," Lopez said. "It is a great thing for the kids and parents. The kids aren't sitting in front of their devices now. We sit together as a family and paint rocks."

Lopez originally got the idea after finding a painted rock in the Spokane area and thought it would be a good thing for Cheney to also have.

There are a couple ways people can participate in the group. One way is by finding rocks that are already painted that say "Cheney Rocks" on the back. Then they can post the picture on the Facebook page and let people know it was found. Later, they can hide the rock again or keep it.

Another way is by going out and finding plain rocks, then returning home and painting a design on them. Acrylic paint is the best kind to use because it dries fast, but paint pens and sharpies have also been used. It is recommended to put a clear coat over the paint so that it does not wash away or become ruined. People can then post their creations on the page and leave clues on where the masterpieces can be found.

One thing Lopez wants out of the group is to just make people's day when they find the rocks.

"It is nice to have this positive thing in such a negative world," Lopez added.

The best places to hide the rocks in the community are the parks and hiking trails around town. It is recommended to not place it in grass so there are no damages to lawn mowers. It is also encouraged to ask businesses for permission to hide rocks in their areas.

Rocks from the group in Cheney have traveled all around the country now due to people taking them on vacations. There have been rocks in places like Louisiana and Tennessee.

One of the unique parts of the group is that anybody can participate no matter the age or the artistic ability.

"My sons thought they were too cool for it at first," Lopez said. "But then they went with me when I hid some rocks at Salnave Park. We saw a little girl find the rocks and she was so excited about it. Ever since then, they have been painting rocks with me."

People can add anybody or themselves to the public Facebook page named Cheney Rocks!

"I hope this can bring the community together and that people can make connections through the group," Lopez added.
