Airway Heights offers free outdoor summer movies

There is no lack of outdoor movies this summer in Airway Heights, thanks to the “Motion Auto Supply Moonlight Movie Series” at Martella Field in Sunset Park.

Even though it is halfway through the series, there are still four more movies happening before it draws to an end.

The past movies shown at the park were “The Iron Giant,” “Hook,” and most recently, “Kicking and Screaming.”

Next up on the list will be “Lego Batman” on July 28. Then “Sing” on Aug. 11, followed by “Grease” for the Airway Heights Days Special Feature on Aug. 18. The moonlight movie series will wrap up on Aug. 25 with “Beauty and the Beast.”

All movies are free to attend. All shows will start at dusk, approximately at 9 p.m.

The tradition of showing outdoor movies in the town has been around for a while as the first were started back in 2006.

“Our first year, we only had two movies, ‘E.T.’ and the ‘Goonies’,” Glen Horton, parks and recreation coordinator said. “It has been a great community event for Airway Heights.”

It is recommended to bring chairs or blankets along for the movie as there is no seating provided. This year, there are no vendors attending the movies so the public can bring their own snacks to enjoy.

The way the movies are selected every year is that the sponsor, Motion Auto Supply, chooses one of the movies. Then the Parks and Recreation Department also has a chance to pick their own movie. The other four movies are voted on by the community through a poll.

“Motion Auto Supply has been sponsors of the event for a long time and without them we would not have such a great community event held throughout the summer for our residents,” Horton said.
