Carla Ramona (Horn) Boleneus

Carla Ramona (Horn) Boleneus, 89, passed peacefully on April 6, 2017.

Carla was born Oct. 24, 1927 in Davenport, Wash., a granddaughter of area pioneers, and one of four daughters of Karl and Belva Horn.

Carla began working at a young age for Washington Water Power, following graduation from Davenport High School.

Carla was devoted to husband Everett, since their marriage in November 1946 after his return from World War II, to their three children near Davenport.

Carla continued the Boleneus' family farm tradition as a life commitment, tending a garden, selling eggs and milk and minding the farm.

She made her home a gathering place for any occasion. She nurtured family, the farm-ethic, and shared her love of music. As her children grew she worked in retail sales for 30 years until retiring.

She was a life member of Davenport Presbyterian Church, Community Grange, Ladies Auxiliary of the VFW and member of Daughters of the Nile. She served as Washington's Grand Chaplin of the Order of the Eastern Star, when she and Everett traveled across the U.S. contributing to a "Bridge of Love" way of life.

Carla left the family farm in 2008 seeking adventure, devoting time to children, grandchildren, and making new friends. Four or more times a week she hosted or played bridge.

She said it kept her "sharp" and indeed she was. She mentored and taught bridge and was known as the "Queen of Hearts."

Husband Everett (2007), sisters Bea Buchser and Dolores Moeller preceded her in death. Carla is survived by sister Jeanne Ross, Spokane; children David (and Connie) Boleneus, Spokane; Dawna (and Dennis) Reed, Cheney; Darla (and Michael) Throop, Davenport; six grandchildren Daniel Boleneus, Allyson (Boleneus) Roberts, Dennis Patrick Reed, Dallas Reed, Madison Throop, Taylor Throop and eight great-grandchildren, numerous cousins, nieces and nephews.

Services will be held at The Shriners Event Center, 7217 W. Westbow Blvd., Spokane, (I-90 Geiger exit 276) noon, June 23, 2017, followed by a bridge card party and refreshments to 4 p.m.

Graveside remembrance is June 24, 2017, 11 a.m. at Veterans Honorarium at Mountain View Cemetery, Davenport.

A memorial has been established in her name at the Shriners Hospital for Children, Spokane and Lincoln Hospital, Davenport.
