Police seek man who broke into Cheney High School

Cheney police are asking for the public’s help in locating a man who broke into Cheney High School, leaving behind a trail of blood and making off with trophies from a trophy case.

The man, described in his 20s, was captured on video surveillance around 11 p.m. Saturday, breaking in through doors in the rear of the school. He wandered around the building trying to open locked doors before leaving with three, cup-style trophies from the 1960s.

Police Chief John Hensley said the break-in wasn’t discovered until Monday morning. Anyone with information should call Capt. Rick Beghtol at 498-9282.

Cheney man injured in Spokane Valley crash

A Cheney man and his passenger were injured in a one-car accident that occurred late Sunday evening, June 11.

According to a Washington State Patrol press memo, at just after 8 p.m., a red, 2004 Mazada 3 driven by Tyson T. Conley, 22, of Cheney was southbound on State Route 27 when it suddenly left the roadway to the west. The vehicle struck an embankment, became airborne and came to rest on its wheels with airbags deployed.

Conley was injured and transported to Valley Hospital. His passenger, 19-year-old Courtney L. Johnson, Spokane Valley, was also injured and transported to Deaconess Medical Center.

The State Patrol cited inattention as the cause of the accident.

Cheney pool season opens this Friday with first free swim

Cheney’s venerable swimming pool is opening for business this Friday, June 16. The pool will open at 1 p.m. with a free swim sponsored by Dr. Andrew Martinssen Dentistry.

Free swims will be somewhat of a theme this summer. The next free swim is June 24, with free swims taking place from 1–5 p.m. each Saturday in July, Aug. 5, Aug. 11 and 12, Aug. 19 and Aug. 26. Various local businesses and organizations will be sponsoring the swims.

The pool’s summer aquatics program gets underway with a Splashball competition, running each Monday and Wednesday, 6:30–7:30 p.m. from June 20 to Aug. 24. According to a Cheney Parks and Recreation Department publication, Splashball is an official program of USA Water Polo, and is open to swimmers of all abilities ages 5 and up. The season cost for Splashball is $40.

Finally, the recreational swim team “Cheney Sharks” gets underway June 19. The season runs through Aug. 24, and costs $123 to compete.

Swimmers must have completed level 3 at Cheney’s “Learn-to-Swim Program,” or pass an equivalency assessment prior to joining the swim team and are expected to continue lessons through level 6 while participating.

Sign ups for Splashball and Cheney Sharks can be made by calling 498-9250.

Terra Vista brush fire quickly contained by local crews

Cheney and Spokane County Fire District 3 firefighters responded to a small brush fire just east of the Terra Vista development and south of power lines near the city’s Cheney-Plaza substation last Friday, June 9.

A District 3 official said Cheney Fire Department’s brush truck initially responded to the mid-afternoon fire and had most of it knocked down by the time other crews arrived. Once it was discovered it was in the district, FD 3 crews assumed control and turned Cheney personnel loose to resume city coverage.

Cheney officials said the fire, which consumed maybe a quarter of an acre, was likely caused by a warming fire built by people living in tents in the area.

Department of Natural Resources crews also responded and took over mop up duties through the weekend, although District 3 did some additional clean up on Sunday by knocking down a brief flare up.
