M.L. equestrians qualify for state meet

The Medical Lake High School Equestrian Team qualified all five school athletes and seven co-op athletes for the state meet, May 11-14.

“This is no easy feat, and was made harder by the icy cold winter we all endured,” team adviser Margie Adair wrote in an email. “Due to safety concerns of trailer horses on icy roads and health issues of working horses hard in the below freezing temperatures, the team canceled as many practices as they were able to attend. This severely limited the team’s ability to practice together, especially on the critical speed team events.”

The team was still able to qualify in 10 individual events and four team events while bringing home multiple gold, silver and bronze medals.

In its 13th year as a team with the school, the team was represented in 13 individual and team events at the 2017 Washington High School Equestrian Teams (WAHSET) state meet in Moses Lake.

The Medical Lake team also consists of eight other members from schools such as Ritzville and St. Maries, Idaho. They include Merlee Liberty, Jessica Swain, Johanna Krentel, Rylee McAllister, Serena Sphuler, Sierra Kasprak, Tatyana Bernal and a foreign exchange student from Spain, David Cabezas Gutierrez.
