Medical Lake tennis sends players to regionals

Medical Lake tennis qualified three boys and a pair of girls to this weekend’s regional tennis tournament at Mead High School.

No. 1 singles standout Noah Ray finished second with a pair of early wins before falling in the district championship to Riverside and their No. 1 seed, Joel Cladera-Garcia 2-6, 0-6.

“We knew he was going to be tough, so Noah went out with the mindset he was going to work on his game and whatever happens, happens,” co-head coach Dawn Eliassen said. “He hung with him almost every point.”

Daniel Miller and Trevor Nilles, doubles’ second seeds, finished third, winning their final two matches and finished 3-1 to advance.

“Trevor and Daniel played some solid tennis matches throughout this tourney,” co-head coach Jake Wesselman said. In their 6-1, 6-2 win over Lakeside, “They strung together some of the best points I’ve seen all season,” he added.

The unseeded girls’ doubles team of twins sisters, Lyndsey and Sydney Cazier, finished third, losing in the semifinals to Lakeside but earning the right to play this weekend with a 6-3, 6-0 win over Colville.

“I’m fairly certain these girls won as many matches in this tournament as they did during league play,” Eliassen said. “They played the absolute best tennis I’ve ever seen them play.”

Also representing Medical Lake were Folke Schroder-Frykhammer, Jasmine Uribes and Heather Barr in singles as well as Lauren Saue-Fletcher and Madelyn Stewart in doubles.

In addition to advancing in the postseason, Ray earned the vote as the Northeast A League’s singles MVP and was joined on the team by Folke Schroder-Frykhammer and Nilles.

Medical Lake’s boys scored a 3-2 win over Deer Park last week to wind up the Northeast A League season with a 9-3 record, second place to Riverside’s perfect 12-0. The girls were 5-9 and sixth, but more than accomplished an early goal of securing just one NEA win after going winless in 2016.
