Forklift rodeo regional tryout in Spokane May 20
Driving a forklift may look easy, but driving one safely requires the right training and experience. Professional forklift drivers from across the state are invited to demonstrate their skills in regional tryouts in Spokane and Seattle. Top finishers will take part in the statewide Forklift Rodeo in September.
The Spokane regional qualifying event is on Saturday, May 20 at the Spokane Central Service Center, 915 N. Nelson St.
Competitors must pass a written exam and a pre-use forklift inspection before competing in the obstacle course. Regional winners will compete in September at the 20th Annual Forklift Rodeo, held during the annual Governor’s Industrial Safety and Health Conference in Tacoma Sept. 19–20.
Cash prizes are awarded to the top drivers at both regional and state levels and to the top teams in each region. Participation is limited to the first 30 drivers who register.

Cheney Fire Department sponsoring open house
The Cheney Professional Firefighters Local 1919, in conjunction with the Cheney Volunteer Firefighters and the Cheney Fire Department, is sponsoring an open house on Saturday, May 13.
In addition to the Mayfest activities happening throughout downtown that weekend, the firefighters invite the whole community to come by the station at 611 Fourth St. between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. There will be continuous tours of the station and trucks, demonstrations and displays of fire and emergency medical equipment, providing the opportunity for the public to ask questions to the firefighters and kids to have fun dressing up like firefighters and climbing through the fire trucks.
The department will furnish information on some of its unique programs, such as response to potential active shooter incidents. The Cheney Professional Firefighters are sponsoring free hotdogs, beverages and popcorn for everyone.
