Medical Lake soccer collects NEA split

Shootout woes continue to plague Medical Lake soccer.

The Cardinals dropped a 2-1 contest at Lakeside, but returned home for senior day to score an easy 5-0 win over Riverside.

The result as the regular season came to an end was the Cardinals finished with a 5-5 Northeast A League (6-8 overall) and were the No. 4 seed. They met league champ Colville (9-2, 10-3) on May 2 in a loser-out playoff game.

In the loss at Lakeside, head coach Zane Higgins commended his team's early effort. "We put a lot of pressure on them the first 30 minutes and easily could have gotten three goals," he said.

As it worked out, neither team scored in the opening 40 minutes with Lakeside's Mark Pratt breaking the deadlock in the 55th minute. But a desperation effort by Mark Jensen evened it with less than a minute to play.

Jensen hit from about 30 yards out. "It was just a rocket, beautiful shot, great goal," Higgins said. The shot came from the right spot, and there was no pressure, Higgins said. "He just nailed it."

But after a pair of scoreless five-minute overtime sessions, the game was decided in the shootout.

"We have issues with shootouts, we always have issues," Higgins said. The Cardinals were outscored 3-1 with Ty Masteller netting the only goal.

Against Riverside (1-8, 1-8) last Thursday, the Cards got two goals from Carter Pivonka and Nick Rosenbeck, his pair coming in the final five minutes, one off a free kick. Kaye Jones collected his fourth shutout of the season, making four saves.
